GR86 Test Drives Email!

So when are we going to get the car??? This test drive malarkey is a little irritating, although very useful and thoroughly appreciated :D IT'S SO NEAR, AND YET SO FAR

My dealer told me my car is due with them on the 3rd, the role out for the GR86 begins from the 1st, take into account PDI and processing I imagine we will start getting our dirty mitts on them the end of the 2nd week of December.

...2023

Had an accompanied test drive this afternoon at Cambridge. The guy who came with me had been down to Goodwood and loved the car. One thing he did say was that he had been told there were 800 cars being delivered! I know, where has that come from? Maybe that was Supra manuals!

I was almost expecting to be disappointed with the car but it lived up to my all expectations. Great handling, wonderful driving position, good torque and acceleration. The ride was better than I had anticipated and likewise the interior. On damp, greasy roads it was quite easy to pull some wheelspin (although the dealership had deactivated Track mode so had no opportunity to try that). I was most taken with how low the front of the car is (I realise GT86 owners won't be surprised), and what a wonderful view out one has from the driving seat.

Downsides? It is quite noisy, the rear camera is not great and I'd have liked rear parking sensors as it's difficult to see out the back.

All in all, it felt like a proper sports car - almost Porsche like in the way it goes down the road.

For amusement, and hopefully reassurance, I reset the trip to see what the mpg was like. The car had only 9.4 miles on the clock and I was out in the car for three quarters of an hour and travelled 22 miles. Now, remember, Cambridge is flat with no hills and the traffic is very congested, particularly between 3pm & 4pm. Started off by going to Sainsbury's to stick some 98Ron in, then did a bit of the A14 followed by some back roads. Not many chances to properly open it up. And, these days, I'm a bit Captain Slow. Result is in the attached photos

I’m having mine delivered to a different Steven Eagell, not sure I’m keen on those plates, with the extra bit on saying “Steven Eagell” again. First world problems I know.

I seem to recall that there was talk that Toyota GB will register the car and supply the plates for fitment by the dealer. But like so much else, that may have changed.

Local dealership rang me before I got the email but I have a good relationship with them and bought from them previously.

I have no such relationship with mine, first Toyota for me. The person I was dealing with has also left.

Turned up at Jemca Bracknell this morning at the appointed time for my long-awaited GR86 testdrive, only to be told that Jenca Reading had my car 😖.

So as not to completely waste my time I stole their GR Supra (2.0l) and took that for a quick spin instead. What a nice - if totally unaffordable - car that is!

I am slightly in love with it... it was very quiet and well-mannered when pootling around, but my gosh that changes when you stamp your foot! I count at least three trees I would have hit without the driver aids kicking in to bring it back in line.

Proper Jekyl and Hyde - kinda reminded me of the dual character of the VTEC Honda Type R in that respect.

Just back from a test drive in Bracknell.

Thoughts
much better power, the torque dip is gone. Seats are more comfortable all the controls are in the same place so it feels familiar but new. For those with the facelift it has all the same graphical functions, lap timer, g force meter etc. the steering is lighter than mine and the ride is feel is a little less raw. Gear changes are nice, a slight improvement on the original and a less notchey 2nd gear. Online sales tell me I am expected to get mine in March. Bracknell told me I am in the first batch to be delivered 2nd on the list. Fingers crossed it will be before March. They said they would charge me 198+vat to fit the duck bill if I order one. They couldn’t give me a price on the spoiler itself but I have the part number.
