GR86 The GR86 “The Orders / Owners List / GR86 Register”

I have been thinking about a comment which the Director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, Paul Johnson, made on this morning's edition of Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg - he suggested that the Chancellor of the Exchequer might increase Value Added Tax in the Autumn Statement on Thursday and that prompted this thought: if that happens, what are the chances of Toyota (GB) PLC (TGB) doing the morally decent thing and bearing the cost of any such increase so that all of us with confirmed orders for the GR86 are not of pocket because of the company's delay in delivering the cars?

I should, in view of the above, point out that the relevant provisions in TGB's New Car Buy Online Terms and Conditions of Sale for Toyota Vehicles would appear to be as follows:

"9.1 We make no guarantee or commitment as to any vehicle build or handover/collection dates. Such dates will be provided to you at the earliest opportunity after you place your order and are estimates only, subject to our amendment at any time. If our supply of the vehicle is delayed by an event outside our control then we will contact you as soon as possible to let you know and we will take steps to minimise the effect of the delay. Provided we do this we will not be liable for delays caused by the event."

"15.1 If the rate of VAT changes between your order date and the date we supply the vehicle, we will adjust the rate of VAT that you pay, unless you have already paid for the vehicle in full before the change in the rate of VAT takes effect."

I accept that whether or not TGB has either fully or sufficiently complied with Clause 9.1 above would ultimately be a matter for judicial interpretation on the particular facts. However, based on the evidence recorded on this forum, an at least arguable case could probably be made for the assertion that TGB has not provided us with "any vehicle build or handover/collection dates [...] at the earliest opportunity after you place your order..." Clause 9.1 implies that TGB will engage in regular communication about build and/or handover/collection dates with the company's online customers so surely where there is, as in this instance, a longer delay than TGB originally anticipated, there is a greater need for more frequent communication on the part of the company...

Finally, on a practical level, if the Chancellor of the Exchequer postpones any increase in VAT until, say, the 1st December 2022, will TGB's Buy Online Team have a system in place to enable any of us who wish to pay for our GR86s before that date to do so?
Toyota UK will apply the current rate of VAT at the time of sale. The same applies to the VED which is likely to increase in April (The latter point was confirmed by TUK during their welcome call)

Yes, that is what Clause 15.1 of TGB's New Car Buy Online Terms and Conditions of Sale for Toyota Vehicles states. However, I still reckon that, given the manner in which many of the GR86 customers who are members of this forum perceive themselves to have been treated by TGB, the company could go a long way to repairing that reputational damage by bearing the additional cost attributable to any increase in VAT - after all, I am pretty sure that Toyota Motor Corporation and/or TGB could well afford to waive Clause 15.1 in such circumstances...

Thanks for the summary @CTG 300 , any speculation (from yourself, or the greater grapevine) as to the potential amount of the VAT increase?

Would be good to know the potential real world impact of this. If Toyota can't spare the energy to write an email once a month, I doubt they are going to absorb £X (insert any value above 0) for the sake of keeping 400ish folk in the UK sweet.

An additional couple of grand whacked onto the list price 2 weeks before collection would really bring this whole journey to a fitting end.

Just called the contact number on the test drive email for Preston.. and of course it was the wrong number :ROFLMAO:. I asked about the test drive and he just said there was only myself in Preston so i would get priority. I just can't see how they are going to manage to fit all these test drives in such a short space of time before buying the car tbh. I guess if they have 5 demo cars.. could have one for each region potentially, with each dealer having a couple of days each but there are still around 65 dealers on that list..

Also he said looks like many are at FoS tomorrow? so it will be the first time they get to see/drive the car so should be plenty of more review articles/vids from Wednesday. Although i don't think it is FoS so not sure what event it is.

My dealerships says all GR centres will have a demo car but it belongs to Toyota uk and they are not allowed to sell it until Toyota say they can or Toyota can recall it back.

fOs event is for staff training only, nothing to do with the media

I'd be very surprised if they have 65 demo cars available in Dec? More likely they have no more than 10 to pass around?

"fOs event is for staff training only, nothing to do with the media" - - he defo said he was going somewhere tomorrow to test drive and plenty of media coverage so who knows.. however with experience so far they don't always have the correct info though so who knows!

Oh just seen this on another post: https://www.gr-zoo.com/threads/test-drives-email.2504/page-2 - training day for the GR at goodwood on the 16 (I think)..

it's tomorrow apparently.

I thought the same about all gr centres having a demo car.

After this experience , everything I here about the gr86 is taken with a pinch of salt

Just a quick note in response to the question in your opening paragraph above - I am not aware of any discussion in the media about the amount of a possible increase in VAT as a consequence of Thursday's Autumn Statement.

However, I agree with you that calculating the total additional amount of VAT payable by all GR86 customers attributable to any such increase would be a worthwhile exercise - even if only to compare that with the total amount of interest which TGB has probably earned since last April on the circa. £400, 300.00 worth of deposits which the company has received from those customers.

Finally, I agree with your closing remark - fingers crossed, though, that the Chancellor of the Exchequer does not increase VAT this week.

Sold Shell and Harbour energy shares this morning… pre emptying the budget. I made £6k since Jan, which offsets the energy costs for a year or two.

I’ve not heard of a VAT hike, CGT allowance / threshold will change, divi allowance for Ltd Co’s will change, threshold for super tax, and higher rates will change energy Co’s to be hot with more windfall tax, including green generators (solar and wind),

I've not had the email yet but I tried to run a quote for a years insurance on their website the other day and couldn't. It let me fill in the whole form, then there was no way to proceed. Sounds like their website is a bit pants.

No email yet. Here we go again...

I probably won't bother with it anyway. Once I know the reg I'll get it changed and run on my own insurance

Just received steps to apply for drive home insurance

I just tried these steps and this link they provided does not work.

https://www.toyotadrivehome.co.uk/private-car/

I tried this one instead :

https://www.toyotadrivehome.co.uk/private-car-annual-insurance/index.html

They seem to have technical difficulty. I can’t go beyond first page.

Also their image under step 6. Is empty. This is about the car itself.

Anyone else has the same issues?
Yes, I am having trouble too. Will send Toyota an error message.

Get the test drive sooner if you can. From GRY experience the Listers demo car got written off pretty quickly and if the weather stays this wet a GR86 will be slippin and slidin with the best of them.

Once the demo is gone it's gone.

No email for me yet, refreshing my emails religiously…….
I don't usually get lots of emails, but predictably, today is one of those days where I end up getting loads of useless crap. So I get excited every time my phone pings only to find it's another newsletter from some vendor I used once and still get offers from every so often.

Raised concerns to T directly. Got a call. Apparently a 10:25 order means it went into the 'second' batch i.e. the second half of total 400 or so. Hence no updates and predicted "sometime in H1 2023" delivery. A fortune teller will probably give a better prediction.
