I think Toyota did fix the majority or atleast offer something towards fixing it. Although I can think of one or two exceptions. i.e. change of owner and the engine failed after like 10K miles, then they got left out of pocket.
I’m thinking that under the new Toyota 10 year warranty scheme we should have at least 10 years peace of mind if the engine does go pop , or whatever, noise they make 🤔

Not necessarily, you need to check the T&C's of whats covered with the warranty after the inital 3 / 5 years (which ever one it has).

The problem with the recalls on the GT86 was that they were out of warranty at that point so it's hard to directly compare. I know of a few failures from the recall and a lot of them depended on the quality of the dealer. I know of at least 1 person who had to go the legal route because of a failure post recall.

What Toyota put out on social media regarding the 10 year warranty and what actually happens in practice doesn't always line up...

True but the recall work itself was warrantied (for 1 year/10k miles)...and I believe any failures as a result of the work were more than likely to occur almost imminently (I think some people reported engines failing on the drive home after picking it up). Given the exposure the failures got, I think its unlikely any dealer would be able to just wash their hands of one should it occur.

I was lucky with my recall. I emailed the dealer asking some questions about the recall failures when I was due to book. The head tech was nice enough to call me and explain that they knew about the issues and he told me that so far, his dealership had handled about 10 recalls with no failures. They did mine in December 2020 and the day I picked it up I reset one of the odometers. Sold the car earlier this month and it had done at least another 10k with no issues, so I doubt it will be an issue for the next owner.

Totally agree with taking Toyota “Press/Media/ etc, with a pinch of salt , we know the GR86 didn’t sell out in 90 minutes as online orders placed days before 10.00 am on 20.04.2022 were accepted 🤷‍♂️ As with all such things it’s the actual wording in the contract/warranty document which is important, and as is the case when anything gets legal the “devil is in the detail”

Edit - Posted The links to the official Toyota Warranty documents here, definitely worth a read:

I thought they offered a 1 Year warranty on the engine, after the recall though @Mike?
Yea it was a 1 year warranty, but wasn't it with the dealer rather than Toyota? If it was Toyota, I don't see why there were dealers refusing to repair it under warranty even when failures were happening quickly after the work was done...

I've tried to stay away from this thread as I think it's overblown.

A serious issue for sure but how many cars have problems Vs how many produced?

Only a handful on social media across the whole world?

Maybe they're all caused by work experience Wayne who pops in once a month to see his Mum at work and has a go on the tools 🤷‍♂️

Agree with this.
There is always the odd few engines that are going to fail no matter what manufacturer. The trouble now is everyone wants clicks on YouTube and know that over exaggerating issues makes clicks. The RTV issue isn’t good but let’s be honest there isn’t a huge number of failed cars that are solely linked to it out there. We are also seeing cars already on 10k+ miles with zero issues that are driven hard.

If it was causing more than the expected tolerance of engine failures which they will have a percentage for, Toyota would have already put out the TSB, no business would happily lose money rebuilding engines.

I'm glad I'm the not the only one who sensed this. Felt like there were a few rather clickbaity videos springing up ("You wont BELEIVE what we found in our oil pickup!", Youtuber head-in-hands face on the thumbnail, etc) that didn't really add much to the debate other than telling everyone that they'd found the same as everyone else.

Keep it standard (engine and drive train wise) , service at Toyota Dealership, use MyT to prove where you have been , or more specifically where you have not been ie a track; enjoy the car and don’t worry if it goes wrong , they can fix it and give you a suitable loan car ( so must be an automatic GR product 😉) whilst yours is off the road , I’m not worried one bit. 👍😎

Sound guidance and certainly what I'll be doing.

Apart from that one bit we don't need to draw attention to... ;)

It's like going into a Doctor's Surgery and wondering why everyone is sick. There will be, that's why they're there. Most go on forums to complain or bring up issues they have so seems exaggerated. Plus the clickbait nature of the Internet today doesn't help. I'll get it to temp and drive it how I want to from day one. I've even planned once it's home and I get it sealed, where I'm going. There'll be 1000 miles on it in no time at all. Drop the oil as a precaution and go from there. There are some with issues but no one had the full picture yet.

Rather than start another thread I’ve added a poll to this one that @KobayashiMaru86 kindly created. With all the stories emerging Is it creating any worries for anyone🤔 Personally I don’t see it as anything to worry about and this could definitely support those who firmly believe “you should never buy a car in its first year of production”
, until the teething problems are sorted out”.

I’m sure Toyota/Subaru will get to the bottom of this even if that involves a sump plug below the oil pick up tube and a FREE 6 monthly safety check/clean of the strainer and oil change 🤷‍♂️

Vote away folks 👍✅

Edit - I’ve updated option 5 in the poll slightly to make it more clear that anyone choosing this option is purely down to the potential engine failure issues and not the general GR86 Toyota Online purchase experience 👍

I normally only jump on Instagram to remind myself why I want a GR86 so a bit annoying when the people I follow are posting issues as well. Both of Max Orido's cars with loose rtv by the sounds of it

As it goes I was looking at those baffle plates the weekend as an option if the sump ever comes off. The annoying thing is if you do that to look after it, warranty goes in bin. When cars are launched here they really need to release a service bulletin/recall to at least do a 1000 mile oil change and sump off to inspect.

I think that PVGR, volksdub and Conscript all make a valid point and that there is a need for us (me definitely included!) to keep a sense of proportion here. However, the more the engine failure issue gains coverage on the Internet - either through the leading consumer-facing automotive titles and/or via social media - the greater the risk of reputational damage to Toyota Motor Corporation, Toyota (GB) PLC and, specifically, the GR86. Any such reputational damage might well have an adverse affect on the residual values of GR86s - in short, those of us who were hoping that any depreciation on the GR86 would be pretty minimal might have to think again...
