The 2.0 litre uses an older tech Nickel / metal hydride battery, the 1.8 litre Corolla uses a newer, lighter Lithium battery that charges / discharges quicker. Both will also drive on electric mode at up to 70mph when there is not much load. The 1.8 is good for 60-70mpg in town, which is pretty much unmatched for a car of its size. The 1.8 Corolla is possibly more economical than the Yaris hybrid and is as you say a very refined drivetrain and ride combination. Perfect for these times of very expensive petrol.I test drove now both 2.0 and 1.8 Hybrid Corolla and actually preferred the driveline of the 1.8. Don't know if its the lighter weight of the car but 2.0 felt heavier (which it is by 70kg). It might be better in road driving but as we drive 90% in the city I prefer the lighter feel of 1.8. In addition, felt like 1.8 was going more with electric power than 2.0, even though it has a smaller battery.
