Hey all, as we have a thread on new owners, purchase locations, and previous cars, I always find it interesting to see age range of owners. Currently have a ST and was surprised at how many were in the 50/60 year old bracket.

I'm 37 in June, on my 4th ford fiesta, with each being more expensive each time, and so now ready for a change, and this looks perfect for price/performance for me. I was looking at the cupra born but @ around 40k i couldn't justify the extra cost at this time.

Maybe Andy could make another chart :)

I think a lot of the “young ones“ will have written the GR86 off as “230 bhp is nowt” , no turbo so no “pops n bangs remap and a 100 extra bhps for a couple of quid on a chip thingy“ , plus “it’s a Toyota and only old folk drive them“ of which they may be correct 🤣

TRS quote upto 250 (stage 1) so quite close,
Pops and bangs are great but we only really have it so people stare as you set off from a round about or the lights (And probs not in a good way as they tut :rolleyes:). I’m guessing people might be looking at the gr86 because it’s a good looking car.
You’ll be lucky to get 100 extra on a chip for fiesta (stage 2 is upto 265)
‘Only Old folk drive them ‘ not gonna lie, my guesstimate was that the vote would be in favour of 40+ but 30-40 range is doing well!

Haha this is very true. It’s not a Golf R/S3 or M140i so a lot of people don’t care. If 300bhp isn’t easily obtained, the car is shunned.

I guess that’s partly why I love my MX5, it only has 180 horsepower but weighs as much as a shoe so really doesn’t need any more power to be fun. People write it off because is a small, low powered car but they’re missing out on all the smiles.

I’m also 31 so I’m in the majority section of the votes so far.
 
It would be interesting to see the colour breakdown for each age group. I’m in the 40-49 bracket and very nearly went red, I’m pretty sure if I was 10 years younger that is what I’d have got but as I want to keep this car until I’m in the free prescription zone I was thinking it would look a bit too mid life crisis, so went for the sapphire.
 
In my 20s and lots of my friends would love or are interested in the GR86 and own 90s RWD cars with similar characteristics.

I think the demographics are more reflective of the fact that people in their 20s these days tend to not buy new cars in the first place, or if they do, will buy something as practical as possible so that it does everything; hence the popularity of hot hatches generally. If I could only have one car I definitely wouldn’t be buying something that I couldn’t fit my mates in the back of! I think this is why 2 seaters and 2+2s are associated with an older crowd in the UK - its not for lack of desirability among younger buyers.

The GR86 is the first and only time I’ve even remotely considered buying a new car personally.

ETA - everyone I know around my age who knows about cars loves JDM and Supras / AE86s / Chasers etc so its definitely not badge snobbery! It’s the Pistonheads demographic that seems to have a bit of a blindspot for Toyota and Nissan’s sports car history IMO.

@86GR now that sounds an interesting survey, feel free to ask the question and set up a poll , not sure how you would do it as a poll can only have 10 options , you may need a poll for each colour 🤔🤔🤔

As for colour I’m on Free Prescriptions and choice was between Magnetite Grey, Ignition Red and Electric blue , the CEO has a Decuma Grey (similar to Magnetite) C-HR as her company car and declared that “if you‘re having a sports car get a shouty colour and I like the bright blue” so Electric Blue it is 🤣

I liked the red when i first saw it and assumed it would be a free colour so was going for it, i refuse to pay extra for paint on new cars so went with black which I’m happy with,
