I'm back from doing over 1000 miles testing these
@EBC Brakes RP1 pads at Spa and the Nurburgring.
Thanks again to
@GR-Admin and EBC. I did actually buy myself a 2nd set with my own money.
First off I was really impressed with the quality. They have very serious stainless steel backing plates with no visible fixings in the pad material. They come in at 14.5mm thick against the OEM ones at 14.7mm. The backing plate is about 0.6mm thicker so you end up with about 1mm less pad material which is handy for heat. The shape is spot on for the caliper and OEM shim.
You will notice they don't have chamfered edges. This gives you more pad area but will make the brakes more noisy. They also have little 'ears' on the bases which make seeing how much pad you have a breeze - such a great idea.
Bedding in was easy. I just hit the local bypass silly early in the morning. 3 medium stops to a crawl, 3 hard stops to a crawl. They felt consistent through it all.
I gave them a good test the next morning on my local 30 mile loop and was really pleased with how they performed. They have really great modulation like the OEM pads but more outright stopping power without being overbearing like a full race pad like a ds1.11 rsl29 or xp8. Just what I wanted. You can't test heat fade on a run like that
This is where I discovered some hidden benefits too. Firstly they are great at removing old pad residue when cold. This is quite a big deal for me between track days as I don't change pads. They are also not very dusty at all. These are 100 Mike white wheels. This level.of dust would usually be there in 10.
Ok fast forward to Belgium and their first real test. Spa has 3 really big stops pretty close so it was all eyes on fade and temps. They performed faultlessly, they don't have the outright stopping power of the above pads but the modulation is much better and you can really lean on the pedal if you need to and get much better braking than is possible on the standard pads. My temp stickers maxed out at 166 which is over 50 less than other pads.
I'll see if I have some camera footage but can't remember what I recorded as I was just farting about with my mate in his C63. Over to Germany and the Nordscheliefe...
This is where they really come good. It's a big track to remember and sometimes you cock things up a bit so having the ability to have good, consistent braking is a big plus. I got 9 laps in before a puncture. When getting new tyres I had a peak of the wear - hardly touched (see what I mean about the little wing ears).
German quality they even cleaned my wheels!
Day 2 was drama free and I cracked out 12 laps.
I got home, whipped the wheels off and had a peek at the pads. They have worn about 2.5mm of 8mm. OEM pads would never have done all 3 days. My carbotechs on last time are the same worn after double the days. Not glazed at all but the drive home would have knocked that off. There is some unevenness and roughness in places which does explain some of the noise - they are the most noisy pads I've used on the car.
I also noticed they wore more on the leading edge. Upto 1mm more.
All in I'm very impressed - my new go to pad actually.
Oh Disc wear was -0.1mm
