May have been discussed at length and I've missed it, but just become aware of the JDM GR RS version.

Entry level 2WD 1.5 CV T auto with a somewhat more restrained 118bhp.

Kahn have one up for sale https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202508205592303

We've been considering a Yaris Cross as a second car as part simplifying the fleet, and the RS kind of ticks the same box. It would definitely be a contender if the price wasn't so silly (considering it simply as a car rather than a rarity)

Tbh for that price I would definitely pick something more practical. No reason to get this just because of the pretty GR Yaris shell.

At those prices you’re into a real one. Obviously a bit cheaper to run but what’s the point.
must agree. its like having the worst bits of the car with awful driveline. sorry my bluntness but it is what it is.
Only positive side is that its 150kg lighter than original car, so it could make a nice platform if you did a fast FWD car with a real GR engine. but then you have to swap quite many bits from actual GR.

Just a side note. The RS was built to tick a box for All Japan Rally, TGR Rally Challenge series, gymkhana, etc., in Japan. There are classes that only allow a 1.5L engine and FWD. One of the mainstays in this class was the standard Yaris (which shares the same engine and CVT with the RS), but the RS is lightyears better due to the chassis and suspension.

I would stay clear of anything with a CVT unless it's a Honda. Just my option

GR Yaris Rally2 car is also based on the Toyota GR YARIS RS.

maybe they had them available. the chassis is more or less the same, so if you anyways change everything it doesn't make much diffference. cheaper to scrap RS parts.
Yea, because it has to be driven on the street, I don't think it can start life as a "body in white," but requires a "frame number." Because you're changing everything but the body, it makes sense to start with the RS.

You are correct. Rally2 GR Yaris frame numbers begin with "MXPA" which is the same as a GR Yaris RS, where as road going GR Yaris have "GXPA"

Yeah, exactly the same as the orignal Evo RSs which came with 14" steel wheels, weedy brakes, and seats out of a taxi, none of which mattered one jot as they would all be binned pretty much as soon as the car was delivered. At least those had the 'proper' engine and drivetrain though!

Will they switch to Gen2 as it has the extra bonding like the GRMN but they don’t have a frame number I believe which is why they can’t be registered in UK whereas Gen2 does.

Good point now the RS is no longer produced for Gen2. The extra bonding necessarily doesn't matter on a rally2 car as the shell undergoes some drastic changes in preparation - Seam welding of shell, reinforcing suspension mounting points, cage installation, steel rear inner arches and arch extensions grafted on so the car can runner a wider track. Also the rally 2 car has a 4mm longer wheel base, on its documentation. Would love a visit to TGR in Jyväskylä to see them in preparation which I believe @Michael Knight has already done!
