My car went in for service this week and whilst the front tyres each have on average 3.7mm depth left, the inner tyre wear is excessive.

Assuming geo is stock and in spec, is excessive inner tyre wear unavoidable?

On my PS4S there was a big difference in inner and outer wear with stock Alignment, had to change them what felt like prematurely because of the inner wear. After that I changed to Sport Contact 7 and a more aggressive alignment with some more camber, the wear has actually come out more even on those - they're now dead too however and I've moved on to Pirellis new PZ5 and gotten my alignment checked!

Small edit to say that I didn't have my alignment checked until I got the SC7 mounted. Make of that what you will as the alignment could have been pretty out from factory but I can't say for sure as that was after about 2 years of pretty hard use.

Thanks @Florens that's interesting on the differences in tyres, especially if you added more negative camber and the inner wear was not as evident.

On my current PS4S as I measure from outer to inner there's more than 1mm difference. 4mm->3.5mm->3.2mm->2.8mm on the inner edge

How much camber are you running?

How are you finding the PZ5? I've been tempted to switch over to them, hearing lots of positive feedback.

I'm now on -2,4 degrees in the front, rear I can't quite remember.
The car is nice and reactive, especially when compared to the stock alignment.

I haven't been able to form a full on opinion on the PZ5 yet as I haven't given them a proper shakedown. The on ramps I've taken since getting them mounted have however felt very positive and quite reminiscent of the Sport Contact 7 tbh. The PS4S felt quite a bit softer (they sidewalls definitely are softer) and slower on turn in than the Sport Contact 7 and so far I definitely don't feel like I've "downgraded" from the Sport Contact 7. I genuinely think that the SportContact 7 and the PZ5 are probably so comparable that you wouldn't notice much of a difference without doing back to back runs. Reviews seem to also more or less confirm this in data: https://www.tyrereviews.com/Tyre-Tests/Best-Performance-Summer-Tyres-For-2025.htm

Thanks @Florens, that video was something I watched and the PZ5 certainly seems to be on par if not a little better than the PS4S.

The idea that they are quieter than the PS4S is also appealing.

Oh they are definitely better than the PS4S, no question about that. It's more of a competition between the Sport Contact 7 and this if I'm being honest as both are way cheaper and at the same time feel sportier than the PS4S that has gotten a bit old by now even though it was a brilliant design at the time and is still holding its own!

That’s good to hear, I’ll fit a set when the MOT comes due in November

Sam, put this reply in the other place too! Have you been swapping the tyres front to back at all? I've found that's helped prolong the life of the inner edges. Have a feeling it may be mentioned in the manual too. As I have a winter wheel and tyre set I swap the wheels front to back each time they get changed over so the inner wear is more evenly spread out. Done about 30k miles in total split over the summer and winter tyres. Inner wear is obvious but not problematic, I'm still on the original PS4s (2021 car) but will replace them at the end of this summer as they'll be almost down to the wear markers.

Cheers, Chris

It is mentioned in the manual that you should be crossing the tyres (i.e. back left to front right etc.).
You should do this every 10k KM according to Toyota.

I did that, it wasn't enough to save the inner edges on my PS4S though!
Mine however doesn't get used as a daily , so the drives tend to be quite sporty, which certainly isn't conducive to conserving the tyres..

Thanks @Chris64, no I have to admit I've not been swapping front to back and you're right, it is called for in the manual

Swap front to back and back to front, swapping left to right too.
