GR86 Best induction kit for airflow?

Can you explain the thing with the filter?

When the airflow sensor gets covered in oil and dust it can throw up the engine management light. It needs to be cleaned. Non oiled filters are a far better way forward for most modern cars nowadays. The oiled ones were originally intended for carburettor cars.

I understand this part 😅

What I meant was, was there something like a revision of the product from K&N recently and is it now supplied with a dry filter?

Because my kit definitely came with the pre-oiled filter and I bought it from an official K&N dealer in February 2024.

I think this applies to the panel filter for the stock airbox.

Sorry, your question didn’t explain what part. 😂
Think they have had so many issues with cars being affected they decided to try and go down the non oiled route. I asked the guy at Bicester about it. He said the filter material is a bit thicker so the oil is not needed to catch the dust.

Been a couple of weeks now, you still happy with it? Any issues to speak of?
Still very happy with the kit, as @unrealpatrick says there is no drone at "normal" driving speeds, it's only when you give it the beans at higher revs you get the lovely induction roar.
I had a TTE exhaust on my old MR2 and that thing droned like hell, sounded great but drove you crazy on the motorway at cruising speeds of 60 or 70mph.
Thankfully this is nothing like that, hence still researching exhausts at the mo as can't live with droning.

Know you said you weren't bothered about losing power but is there any noticeable loss?
No noticeable loss in power or gains, but just feels faster with the extra induction roar. It did come with a dyno sheet to say +8.31HP @6497rpm with the disclamier - "results will vary" 😂

The StratifiedAuto video posted earlier seemed to confirm a power increase on the dyno; subtle, and only at the top end, but enough to say that at least you aren't losing anything for the better noise.

I can confirm it definitely doesn't feel like loosing any HP... but be aware that the K&N intake was tested on the North Ametican spec car. American cars come with the charcoal filter in the stock filter housing, which is known to reduce power output by 5-10 HP. I would assume any testing to be irrelevant for us, since EU spec cars do not have this filter. The measured gain is most likely due to the charcoal filter delete rather than the K&N intake itself.

Was more concerned over losing that chamber that sustains the power in the mid range. Still undecided what to do about the intake but definitely want more intake noise. Riding the bike this week reminded me how good the intake on the Street Triple is

True, I'd forgotten about that. I went back through the video and couldn't see any mention of the filter, but someone asked in the comments and it seems that they did their first dyno run with the stock box + filter:

So yeah, it seems their gains were probably largely from just removing the charcoal filter from the equation. However, looking at their power results, it looks like it's still no worse than a stock car with no charcoal filter, so for those of us just wanting more noise, it should be okay.

If anyone wants a 20% discount on K&N I got a voucher from Collecting Cars Coffee Run at the weekend.
Just enter COLLECTINGCARS20 in the promo code section.
Its generice code so can be used by many people.
They now do an oil free panel filter so it doesn’t screw up the MAF sensor.
Typical. I'm now in a position to order one, so I went directly to the K&N site to use this discount.....not in stock, 6 weeks for delivery :/

@grzoostuff - when you ordered from Amazon, was that still coming from abroad? It's £425 on there from what I've found, which is even better than direct from K&N with the discount, and quicker...but I assume it's going to have import fees.

I don't know if you were interested but Rogue Motorsport are doing a 'dyno day' on 8th June for us '86'ers. Think there's 1 GR86 confirmed going so it'll give us a rough baseline for the car if you were keen.
Would be awesome to see what a UK car makes with this intake though if they did another!

Can't make it unfortunately, but not too bothered about power output numbers personally, so no matter. Cheers though.

Yes it came from the US I think so waiting time either way.

Anyone find any videos of the Dry Intake Filter Stock Box noise?
