Hey all, I'm a proud owner of my GR Yaris for almost a month now. So far I'm in love with it and astounded with the power delivery of the car. Probably the best car I have ever driven so far. So the kicker is, I traded in my LS3 SSV Commodore ute to get the Yaris. I'm having trouble trying to explain to friends & family who are not particularly 'car people' of why I"downgraded" and why I spent $50k (aud) on such a car. What do I tell them to make them understand?

I show them around it like I'm doing a car review:

  • Get them to lift the bonnet and boot lid to feel how light it is.
  • Show them the carbon roof.
  • Show the the battery in the boot for weight saving along with the shit parcel shelf.
  • Tell them the wheels are 1500 a pop.
  • talk to them about the 4WD system.

Then watch as their eyes glaze over and they doze off.

Depends on the public.

Most people don't care and just are conditoned to go 'awe' for a sportscar shape or loud exotic exhaust. Happy to go under the radar this time over.

If genuinely interested in the car, my point of entrance is pointing out Toyota's performance in the WRC, most don't have a clue...

If someone interested in me, knowing I like cars and not getting it, I say it's my dream car and prefer it over just about any other sportscar/Porsche/Ferrari (references they know).... They nod and we continue talking about wahtever intrests them 🤣

Yup exactly this. I have done exactly this the first few times since I've had mine. Trying to over-explain & justify why I wanted it and hook them in.

You can literally see that all the info just flies over their head. I've accepted it now and just enjoy it and save it for the people who know what it is.

Very true. Also keep mine dirty especially if it's gonna sit outside somewhere for a longer time. Completely goes under the radar for 99,758% of the population :ninja:

The remaining 0,248% however will at least light up their eyes, maybe a tear of joy even, and will continue the rest of their day with a smile on their face, imaging driving it in all kinds of places 🥰 (still lingering on the one I spotted going the other way on the motorway yesterday, what is their story etc, for no real reason as I have one myself)

Very interesting to say the least....

Still gets lots of looks. My missus was following me to my house in her car the other day, and when we arrived she said "lots of people looking at your car, I hadn't noticed that before!"

But when people ask, it's usually "the little rally Yaris".

Picked up my MD and a colleague the other day from the train station in Manchester for a client meeting. They're both aware of what it is, and both like it. I'm not too familiar with Manchester, and managed to get in the wrong lane at the lights after coming out of a side road, with a long line of cars in the lane I wanted. So the option was to indicate and wait for someone to let me in, or to go to the line at the lights, and then floor it when the lights went green to get in front of the car at the front in the left lane. I asked my passengers what they wanted me to do, and they opted for the latter option. The car to get in front of was a Prius, so I was fairly confident of my chances. When the lights changed and I gave it some beans, we got away easily and without any fuss. My MD said "bloody hell, that was more impressive than I thought it was going to be - no wheel-spin, no drama, and you weren't really giving it ten-tenths were you...?" It's an impressive little thing (and I managed not to kill my boss)!

"A Yaris, but a sporty one" and usually leave it at that. I find nobody actually cares :D

Lots of animals turn round when it chirps through the intake though.

Exactly what I say. Those that know, know what it is.. those that don't probably won't be that interested so no point explaining.

Did have an old lady, who drove an old yaris, say to me " is that what the new yaris looks like? I might get one!"

Like this?

- A little angry white shed
- Pensioners Shopping Trolley
- Doris' Grocery Getter

...are my normal responses, otherwise I say It's a road legal rally car and then start to nerd out... 😅 😂
