It sounds like you cancelled the 'locating sensors' search.
I had this last winter, and in my case the sensors were working and broadcasting (my handheld TPMS reader has no problem with them) and the car, it turns out, _was_ _listening_ to them (so, good news). I came out to an unnoticed flat tire and the dash light came on almost immediately upon moving. It wouldn't/couldn't tell me which wheel or the pressure (though I had no troubling figuring that out...). Unfortunately, I also had a number of false alarms from it throughout the winter (and not from temperature-related pressure drops). It usually went away pretty immediately, but a couple of times I found somewhere to pull off and check with my handheld reader.
They're not OEM sensors, but they and the hand-held reader both report that they're of the correct type. :

How it happened last winter: I tried to have it find the sensors, it never said it did even after 100s of km. I finally cancelled the search and suddenly it found them-- locations and pressures and everything. Then I stupidly did the 'set pressures' thing to calibrate them, and the car lost them never to find them again. Cancelled the search, but I couldn't replicate the earlier thing where it randomly found them.
This winter, with new tires, the handheld reader still has no problem, but the car still can't find them and now when I cancel the search I get a permanent (until I restart the search) message about a TPMS malfunction.
