Hi all. Now that I have a confirmed order for a GR86 it's time for an intro.

I missed out on the GR first time around and only recently saw that the orders were open again, so I broke the news to Mrs Eoin and signed up.

I'm waiting for a delivery date now and really looking forward to this car - will it live up to the hype?

To your question: “will it live up to the hype?” I appreciate everyone is different here, but I have to admit, I driven the GR86 the first time around and was unimpressed. I compared it to my then owned Z4 and and couldn’t justify the extra layout. I then got a loan of the GR for a good few hours and spent more time with the car. It was only then I began to appreciate it, slowly, I started to bond with the car more. A few months passed and I then sit in one at the dealership again and immediately wanted it. For me it was a process but I now want the car and believe it’s worth the price tag.

Have you driven one prior to ordering?

No, I've not driven one. Mainly because I don't think that I'll get anything more than a superficial experience on a test drive. I'm not sure if that's wise, but historically I've always decided on a car before the test drive anyway. In theory and from the reviews I've seen, it does what I want from a car. Wait and see ....

You can also be reassured that the rate of depreciation on these cars will be slower than most. Also, you’ll have 14 days from delivery to see how you bond with it and decide then. In the regard, there is no risk and you should consider that your ‘extended test drive’.

I didn’t test drive.

Previous car was a 991.2 Carrera T - 7MT with RWS - which I had for 5 years - fabulous - now in Singapore.

By the time my GR86 arrived I was full of gloom, buyers remorse had kicked in and I’d convinced myself; it couldn’t possibly be as good as the reviews.

The GR86 is lighter, slimmer, with better ground clearance & more flexible storage. It’s a perfect daily - particularly with all-season boots.

Running costs are a fraction of the Porsche [warranty, connectivity, maintenance, tax, fuel efficiency etc. - don’t get me started on tyres!]

As a daily the GR86 delivers 70-80% of the T’s performance but 100% of the fun.

A couple of reviewers suggested “caterham like characteristics” which sounded like utter BS. However, the more I get to know the GR86 the more I’m reminded of that simple analogue experience. I love it.

And there’s the added bonus of not having to deal with Porsche or their dealers.

As long as none of the following are a deal breaker and you’re happy that the car is about driving involvement and carrying momentum rather than winning traffic light standing starts you’ll love it.

• No turbo
• No alarm system
• No auto dimming mirror
• No ducktail spoiler
• No parking sensors
• No concept of customer care from Toyota uk
• No coat-hook

I dailied an Elise for 4 years / 36 k miles. This is a sensible option!
