While reading the engine failures thread (fun times), someone mentioned MyT Connected Services could be used to verify they hadn’t had their car on track in case of a warranty claim. This got me curious about what tracking is going on. This is the Toyota page on the service: https://www.toyota.co.uk/owners/servicing-and-aftercare/my-toyota/myt-and-connected-services

“Stay in control of your Toyota from your smartphone. Using the MyT app on your smartphone, wherever you go, you can communicate with your car*. Plan journeys from home, find your car, optimise your driving, receive driver analytics, and service & maintenance notifications.”

Summarising some key features:
  • Car locator
  • Sharing planed journey to car
  • Turn on Hazard light remotely
  • MyT app acts as a car data logger, letting you retrieve past driving data, including average speed, acceleration/braking events and mileage, for convenient business and general driving style analysis.
  • Service reminders
  • Warning light descriptions
  • Fuel level
  • Remote lock / unlock
I don’t think our cars have nav, so I’m guessing sharing journeys doesn’t work. I think I’d rather put a private tracker / AirTag in my car if I’m worried about it being lost / stolen and disable these features. I’m not buying into “for convenient business and general driving style analysis”; just seems like information that could potentially be used against you, more than useful data for you. I’m aware the ECU will be tracking some data whether or not you disable Connected Services.

RE proving the car hasn’t been on track, the onus would be on Toyota to prove it was (unless you volunteered it) rather than you to prove it wasn’t. FWIW, I’ve had my GT for 6 years, and never tracked it as it’s my daily and only car; the same will be true for the GR. however I don’t like these big brother features, and think they’re more likely to be used against you than add real value.

How many of these features work with the GR86, and how do we feel about them?
I believe you can disable all of these features?
Is there anything in the warranty that requires leaving them switched on?

If it’s the same as the yaris, speed only shows on the website and it will say where you were and what speed at that point, I’ve found it quite fun checking my autobahn times. The app just shows an average whole trip speed from memory.
There may well be a difference between the data that is collected and that which is easily accessible through the web interface / app

“How can I deactivate MyT Connected Services
If you want to temporarily stop MyT Connected Services, you can turn on Privacy Mode to disable the GPS function. From the Car section slide to the right part of the slider, click on Car settings, then switch Privacy Mode on*.
If you want to permanently stop MyT Connected Services on the TOYOTA MyT app, first select the specific car from My Garage, then click on Connected Services Center, select the Active tab and then Connected Services. Follow the flow to deactivate the services. “

I don’t see anything in the FAQs that suggests switching off Connected Services would be a problem.

Deactivating the data tracking in MyT won't affect warranty. The other data logging that predates MyT will still be logging away
