I’ll start by saying I’m not sure if I’ll ever need to buy another car. Not saying it’s perfect (more on that in a minute) BUT I’m extremely happy I bought it.
I joined this forum originally as I had a GR Yaris from new. As much as I believe it was probably the most capable vehicle I’m ever likely to drive, I had a couple of issues with it.
Firstly, I’m not that good at driver but I’m reasonably competent - however unless I really pushed it I found that it could feel a bit ‘boring’. And if I’d have pushed it into ‘non-boring’ territory I doubt I’d have kept my licence for very long.
Secondly - the roads where I live are mostly quite dull, maybe if I had access to the Yorkshire moors/Wales/Scotland or something I’d feel differently.

Onto the GR86:
I really love how it looks, but most importantly it just feels fun all the time - without ragging it, it just feels nimble and is a delight in the corners. Although I paid top £ for it, it feels as good as new thanks to the previous owner @Alex-GR86 taking exceptional care of it and not driving it very much 😝.
Only had it for a few weeks, but I’ve been driving it every chance I get - took it on a 450-mile round trip to Hull and it was great on all kinds of roads.
My other car is an imported 2006 Elgrand, which I’ll keep for occasional van camping/lugging duties, but I’ve found myself using the Toyota way more than expected, even to nip to the shops.

Of course nothing is perfect, but I’m happy that the only niggles I have are very minor and easily fixable if they really start to bug me, namely:

The horn - already mentioned this is a bit feeble 😝 this could easily be remedied by people not doing daft things that require me to use it!

The ‘smart’ entry system - this one does annoy me. I just want doors that unlock when I press the fob - none of this witchcraft that unlocks it automatically when you are near to the thing - already lost count of the number of times I’ve walked back to check it’s definitely locked, but of course when you pull the handle it opens anyway 😜

The indicators - apologies if I’ve changed lane in front of you and it looks like I’ve changed my mind 3 times - I’m just trying to cancel the fooker!

Stereo is a bit underwhelming - might have to do something about that, but I see that there are some fairly straightforward ways to address that 👍

Passenger air bag light - from what I can gather, the glowing ‘air bag off’ light is to actually tell you that it’s on? Seems odd.

But very minor niggles aside, it’s huge fun, surprisingly practical and as it’s got a Toyota badge on it I don’t have to worry about any huge nasty surprises thanks to the warranty.

I’m also not sure I’ll ever trade it for another car. While not perfect, I think it’s the best balance of practicality, price, power, and fun that’s available, and with the way the car market is going I’d be surprised if anything bests it before petrol cars are banned.

Smart entry system is fairly simple. Touch the inside of the door handle to unlock, the two lines on the outside to lock. Both functions can also be done with the key. The car won’t lock or unlock based on proximity alone, and each key can be “turned off” until next use by holding lock and pressing unlock twice. There is a way to fully disable it in the car, but I like the feature so don’t know the “cheat code” to do it.

One option for being able to check it’s locked from a glance is to install the mods society window fold module. It’s the first and only mod I did, because I got sick of forgetting to fold the mirrors before turning the car off, and once they were folded I couldn’t easily check it was safe to open the door. It’s a cheap, easily fitted, and completely reversible quality of life mod and I’m very happy with it.

The passenger airbag off light does actually mean the airbag is off. When you have a passenger it will change to passenger airbag on. It’s based on the occupancy sensor.

It’s covered here:

Essentially, when the car is locked the mirrors fold. When it is unlocked they unfold. Really surprised it’s not a standard feature of the car to be honest!

I'm not a fan of this auto-mirror folding mod tbh. It might be okay in Florida, but when the temperatures up here are usually -7c (or lower) in the Autumn/Winter and the car is completely frozen, I certainly don't want the mirrors to be automatically trying to rotate themselves outward when the mechanism is solid with ice. It's bad enough having (mistakenly) folded them in myself and then have to extend them with that awful 'crack' sound...

Glad to see you are enjoying it so much Griff. There is always a sense of occasion when driving these cars, it's a ground up sports car and feels it even if you're just popping to Sainsbury's. That being said when you are able to push it (unfortunately quite rare on our roads) it enters another level, the chassis is superb as you start reaching the limit.

Really glad you are enjoying it, you already have the stereo settings recommended by Leo Sayer on here BTW. I was going to add the Focal speakers but never got around to it, sorry 😂. I know what you mean about the keyless entry, you get in the habit of checking by pulling the handle with your finger tips. BTW I got Toyota to deactivate the sound generator in software, they also enabled the comfort door option and windows on the key fob, so holding unlock will lower both windows. They are amazing cars and I’m so glad it’s gone to a great home.
On the wing mirrors, the A110 has the auto folding mirrors and it definitely offers some reassurance that it’s locked, haven’t had to walk back once. I also don’t miss the indicators, you get used to it but obviously it niggled a bit because the new ones are normal 😊. Enjoy! Hopefully we will get to meet at a car event at some point in the future, I still look out for GR86s and wave.

I find the window on key fob drop to be pretty hit or miss, sometimes takes several attempts. I still need to get both doors unlocked rather than just the drivers side which I've kinda been reluctant to do as I like the added security. I wonder if there's a feature that locks the doors once you're on the move, I'm sure my gt86 had that.

Totally get your experience with the Yaris, I remember test driving one and whilst incredibly capable it did take some speed to feel alive in a way the gr86 doesn't require, what a joyful machine it is!

Nice to read about, your predicament and reasoning is exactly what I keep going round in circles on doing exactly the same thing myself. I rented one abroad for a week and it was superb. It’s just the sentimental aspects of my Yaris that keep me if I am honest.

It wasn’t an easy decision

Wow, another GR86 in Wycombe, I have a silver one and am based in Totteridge.
I have seen one other pavement grey like yours minus duck tail that parks at the bottom of Hatters Lane in the company car park on the left as you go down the hill.
I have installed the folding mirror kit, was simple and worth it so you can see if the car is locked from distance.

I've had many cars with auto-folding mirrors since the late 90s. Have literally never found that to be a problem, even with thick encrusted frozen rain which is vanishingly uncommon in the UK.

Auto-fold without worry :D
