I'm just reading the Christmas bumper Auto Express (with the 2022 sports car test) whilst eating my eleventieth sausage roll - as ably flagged up by our fine (and local to me) comrade @Pappyjohn here .

I know that GR86 vs 2 series on B roads has strong "seriously, why the f**k even bother" vibes, but might be worth a read (or another mag to be stashed away).


And while I have your attention (!), how old do we think Outspoken And Opinionated Motoring Columnist Mike Rutherford's (no not that one) photo is nowadays?

And that in itself is an interesting indication of how few (new) direct rivals there are for our GR86 steeds.

I was (kind of). When I was thinking of replacing the GT86, I found the idea of a second hand M2 interesting. Still a bit pricey (not just to buy) so I put the idea out of my head, but if you're looking for a smallish, rear drive, manual coupé, the 230i probably fits the bell nearly as well (assuming you can get it with a manual box like the M2?).

If we were looking at new though that car as tested is £50k which you’re then touching on alpine A110 territory which I would say is more in line with the 86 but then it’s £20k more!
