GR Yaris GR Yaris & Automatic transmission?

Yes, it surfaced around the time the GR Corolla was announced. Not heard anything since.

"The eight-speed automatic version of the GR Yaris is expected to include paddle shifters but those looking for slightly more involvement will also be able to use the shift lever. As with a proper rally car, Toyota has designed this shifter to change up a gear when pulled towards the driver and to change down a gear when pushed away, the opposite of other Toyota models with automatic transmissions."

OT but interesting to see if they will bring more potent engine for new GR, with what spec it will be tested to EU as current GR Corolla spec engine is not brought to EU as such. maybe sub 300hp there then..

Corolla engine claimed to have stiffer valve springs and bigger exhaust valves

Ive driven a Honda with vario automatic system. omg......good for a daily....

I’ve always hated autos when they do the “push for a bigger gear, pull for a smaller gear” thing. Do OEMs think drivers are idiots?

Hurrrdurrr wanna go forward, must push forward hurrrdtuurrr

maybe the chief designer was a boat owner and the idea comes from there.

To be fair, it's the sort of thing that seems to be the intuitive answer until someone who's been driving H-pattern manuals sits down and tries it. People who have only driven automatics have no problem with it. Our issue with it is that on an H-pattern the only purely fore-aft motion (1-2, 3-4, 5-6) puts the lower gear in the front, not the rear.

I used to have a Smart Roadster Coupe (two, actually-- they're a ton of fun) and, while the robo-shifted transmission was it's greatest deficiency, it was best enjoyed in 'manual' mode (which it defaulted to). When I first got it I was constantly flicking the lever in the wrong direction (the steering wheel paddles felt gimmicky).
 
If I had a sequential box that had me pushing forward to get a higher gear, whilst acceleration was pulling me backwards, I'd think someone at the manufacturer had lost the plot. Pull backwards as you accelerated, push forwards as you brake. I don't know how something so intuitive could possible be missed.

"Forward for go forward faster and back for go forward slower" isn't best, but it is intuitive.

Also, you may overestimate how much acceleration presses one back in a Smart Roadster Coupe. :)

anyone has more detail on Japanese rally Championship series for 2023 - would have just looked on the race how the auto car performs..
