The have been posts on Facebook and also on the "other place" about issues with the GR Yaris gearbox.

Some have had issues with it popping out of second gear, others have said that the gears often crunch, etc.

Then there are others who feel that the gearbox is pretty much perfect and have no issues.

With this variance, is it something that people have to live with, or is there something adjustable or 'fixable' at the dealer?

I find the gear change on mine to be amongst the best I've ever experienced, so it seems strange that others have a mixed experience. It can't all be down to driving style either, can it?

I have done around 8‘000km so far with two trackdays.
I‘ve never had any issues whatsoever with the gearbox.
And i honestly think it is one of the best, if not the best gearbox and „shift feeling“ i‘ve ever had in any car.

I had a couple of close calls where i got into 5th instead of 3rd, once nearly wen’t into 2nd instead of 4th, one or two times where i couldn‘t make it into 3rd because i released the clutch too early.

None of these where because the car or gearbox did anything wrong.
They where just because i wasn‘t 100% focused, released clutch too early or wanted to change gears too fast and therefore messed it up. 🤷🏻‍♂️

My Gearchange improved when changing gear oils (in 10tkm) so worth testing out if you have any issues in gear change.

second the oil comment...after so many years of trying different oils in huge amount different boxes and also seeing the vast technical oil improvements over time can say not all oil's are same even if spec is similar, just trial and error

had all oils changed at 2000miles. I do notice the 2nd gear is a little more notchy when changing up from 1st.
Therefore when driving faster it is not a smooth or fast change as it requires more accuracy. i can live with it.
all other gears up/down are perfect.

This is what I mean - I don't think this is 'right' as some people have this notchy change, whereas others don't. I think I'd speak to the dealer and get them to look at it. It's not a characteristic of the car, as it's not universal.

I honestly think most of the issues are user error. I also think manuals are fading out with so many cars now being auto. It will unfortunately become like North America where so many drivers have issues because they lose the skill of being able to drive a manual. Inevitable.
Well, I'm certainly not a great driver, but have no issues at all with mine. I think there's more to it than that - at least in some cases.

i will keep a watch on it for now. i can live with it cause i dont like launching the car 1st to 2nd, so not that much of an issue at the moment.
is this a symptom of a split torque mount rubber ? why only 2nd gear ?

Some have improved 2nd gear woes by adjusting the shift cable, done by dealer or DIY here:

thank you ! good reference point incase i decide to ask for it done under warranty.

I have had it crunch a few times, but it was definitely my fault - not the car.

For me the trickiest gear change is 2nd to 3rd, specially when the car is on a turn. I’ve missed it 2 o 3 times because you really have to guide it through.

I disagree, having only owned manual cars I know how to change gear. The fact that I am not alone in having the dealer adjust the gear change would suggest its a setup issue. Ive not heard of any UK cars have the opposing out of gear issue that I’ve read about in Australia.

Colder temperatures over the last week have shown how my change is not as sharp as usual. Three miles down the road when "the message" disappears from the dash, all is right again.
In contrast, my 2 previous Type-R's who needed 7-8 miles of driving (12 mins) before it let me shift cleanly. Same roads, same time early morning going to work routes.

I like it. I've never miss shifted and reckon I've found a dead spot and had to go back and try again maybe 5 times.

Agree with others an oil change does help. Mine's currently in for its 2nd change in 8k miles.

I adjusted it and that helped the left to right, I fitted the shortener and that has really made it better up and down

Can of worms question, "what oil works best " 😁

This is why I put 'most of the issues are user error', in my original post. I didn't mean all of them. I am aware of the issues with adjustment at the selector.

I too have missed gear changes as another said whilst cornering, though we shouldn't be changing gear in a corner, but that is user error. I've also fluffed gear changes, but that's just me being bit rubbish or trying to rush it. Best way to change gear is slowly and precisely. Never rush it.

Got to agree, auto's seem to be the only option in some makes and models. Nearly on 3000 miles so way below some but had no issues with gearbox.
