GR86 Evo Tyre Test 2023 with GR86

I'm not suprised to see the sport contact 7 doing well. I was really impressed by them on my type R. they fealt like a big step forward from the 6, which was already a great tyre. my criticisms of the 6 were that they wore very quickly and fealt a little softer on turn in. I didnt run the 7s all the way down but they appeared to be holding up much better than the 6s.

I've never compared a sport contact 7 against any MPS before, but i did go from sport contact 6 to MPS4S on my megane trophy. the michelin offered more performance in pretty much all areas than the contact 6 at the expense of ride quality and tyre roar. MPS4S are a VERY noisy tyre. with the sport contact 7 improving massively from the 6, i imagine its performance is a lot close to the MPS4S but with less noise and better comfort.
This is all subjective obviousley, but i have driven each of these tyres.

Personally, I wouldn't put MPS4S on the GR86 unless its being taken on track or given a significant power increase. I don't think it isputting enough energy into the tyre on the road to warrent the extra cost and increased tryre roar. I might sound like an old fart but they are REALLY LOUD! Also suprising to see it so far down the leaderboard on these tests. It's often thought of as the benchmark UUHP tyre.

Shame there is no MPS5 in this test. it's probably the sweet spot for the GR86 along with the continental.

I put PS4S on my old E92 M3 and it ruined the car. Part of its charm was sticking it in MDM mode and sliding it out of corners and roundabouts like a doylum. Once the PS4S was fitted it became significantly more difficult to unstick and it took away about 80% of what I actually liked about it. Id hate that in the GR86.

My choice would be the F1's, I'd expect them to be progressive unlike the PS4 or PS4S and simple enough to unstick.

Somehow, even on PS4, the GR86 is not a grip monster - I have the same tyre, almost the same size, on a hatchback of the same weight (and torque) as the gr86 yet there's never any concern with grip, while in the same conditions the GR86 generates less grip - probably due to the stiffer body/springs. It is progressive still though (in less than summer temperatures).

I'm tempted to go for some Cross climates when the time comes though, just to bring a bit less temperature sensitivity to it all.
 
Interestingly a GR86 was used for the annual tyre test, so might come in handy at some point for someone (likely not for a while for me!).

It’s not Evo Car of the Year so hope I’m not upsetting anyone with spoilers (if so please shout!) - Continental SportContact7 was the overall winner and was best on dry and wet handling (on both lap times and subjective) as well as dry and wet braking and rolling resistance.

Michelin Pilot Sport 4S didn’t finish highly overall, but was good on the “road route” and here the Continental fared less well - Bridgestone Potenza Sport won on this section (and was 2nd overall).

3rd overall went to the Maxxis Victra Sport 5 VS5 which was getting on for half the price of the Michelin, was also the joint heaviest! (10kg, lightest was 9.48kg)

NB tyre size tested was 225/40/18 as opposed to the 215/40/18 PS4 that the GR86 came on in the U.K.

I've heard good things about the F1s. I'm in the same boat as you and don't want to remove that fun aspect of the car by fitting overly sticky tyres. Let us know how you get on!

In a 225 40 18, Camskill do the Conti SC7 for £81.70 and the Eagle F1's for £83. Will price up with my local fitter to see what they can do but both are reasonable. Michelin about £15-£20 more but I know they work all the way to the markers and a bit beyond.
 
How lucky we are to have a comprehensive tyre test with our car! We can pick and choose the exact characteristics we want from a tyre.

As for all of you who suspect foul play, I have a hat for you:

An update to this as I'm probably going PS4 or PS5 since Michelin have their £50 cashback offer on if you buy 4 so they work out cheaper and should last longer then the Conti's which my tyre fitter talked me out of. He could get the Conti Premium but not the Sport. My only slight concern with the PS5 is it's new to me and how good is it really. Supposedly better wear but same grip as PS4 so looks to be a no brainer but you never know.

From what I've read it seems most people are happy with them and they feel like a ps4, just last a little longer. I don't think you'll go wrong if you like the ps4 [emoji106].

Sidewall is rather nice too...

225’s fit, are more available and as a ripple are cheaper than 215’s.
 
I went to 225 PS5's on Friday. Apart from the yts messing up pressures which I've sorted now, they seem OK so far. Still too cold and damp to really push them but early signs are fine.
