If anyone knows John Barker, you can tell him the volume maxes at 63 because that's the maximum unsigned integer value that can be expressed in 6 bits, which is what they will be using for the volume level.

We used to have the same at Linn, but at one point someone decided that 0-100 would be more 'human friendly' so we had to map the 64 discrete steps in the chip to 100 (actually 101, 0-100!) on the display, resulting in some steps that incremented the displayed volume but didn't actually change the sound level!

And yes, some people complained about that

With the standard speakers? For me, they start wobbling at about 35 and are mostly unlistenable much above 40.

With the Focals they seem louder for the same volume, and of course much better controlled, meaning 40-odd is actually viable.

15 though, that's barely audible!

I meant more of the fact that volume 15 for me is loud and I wouldn’t want to go much louder so I’m amazed that people are listening to things at such a high volume. I’m guessing they don’t have as good hearing as me.

As an aside, funny to see this article online at last as it was in the magazine what feels like aaaaages ago. I had every single issue from about 2019 until about June 2025, shame I just seemed to lose interest. The long termers was one of my favourite sections, a little different perspective than another press day!

You know in my entire life I never considered the volume knob to be a percentage of maximum volume, unless there is a physical stop, like on my headphone amp.
