Does anyone have a picture of the dipstick level when engine is cold and also one of when it's hot (and then switched of for 8 min+ to check level) ?
Much appreciated!
I'm interested in the difference between the cold and warm levels as this bloody oil is so thin when warm, it's very difficult to check the level.

Not sure why you need to check so soon after turning off.
Officially you should check the oil when completely cold. Thats the only time. You just get an incorrect reading when warm.

He is asking because he is also correct. In the manual the procedure is to warm up the engine and let it sit for more than 8 minutes before checking

He presumably wants this so he can check the oil when the car is cold and subtract the delta between the two so he doesn't have to wait around

You do you boo, but officially here is the manual extract

Someone with dirty oil could do this.

Since OP is concerned about oil levels, I also add this:
Elsewhere on the forum we have discussed engine failures due to oil starvation during high G braking/curve taking. The consensus is afaik that oil level should not go below max and that overfilling approx 0,5l seems beneficial to avoid oil pressure dips which aftermarket ECUs can detect (at your own risk obviously).

The volume difference between max and min is 1 litre (acc to the manual) which is huge, so it's really a bad idea having oil close to min when driving hard!

Thanks, yes exactly correct! :)

Not sure if just my dealer, but after last oil change my oil level was bang on the maximum mark. Maybe they have been told internally to make sure the fill to max mark?

With 6,000 mile servicing there’s no need to check the oil levels…….. 🤯🤭
If you drive hard, you will use some oil for sure. I don't need to fill up but then I change every 3000miles thereabouts...

And yes, dealers don't always fill up correctly, I had mine with less then half on the dipstick back from a dealer once, and as I pointed out in my previous post, there is a case for overfilling a bit to prevent high G oil starvation, then you need to know the starting point too.

My tip: make a cross-hatch in the dip-stick surfaces so it holds the level reading a bit better ;)
That's actually a great idea. The Yaris in particular seems to be problematic with oil measurement, mainly due to the way the dipstick can scrape the oil off as you pull it out, but also due to the thin 0w20 oil.

I've used a scriber-pen (hard-metal point) to make that cross-hatch... which holds the oil reading much better than the original flat/smooth surfaces.
Just be cautious about cleaning very well any ev. metal debris - you do not want that on the oil sump! 😬

Sorry to bring up an old post... I had my MK2 serviced and after 900km I checked it, and while it was hot and idle for 10 minutes, it was over the maximum... I think it was about 300g... I think the dealer put 4.5L instead of 4.3L. Is that possible? Do you recommend removing the excess? Could it have done any damage? It's hard to see but it reached where the red line is.

I routinely do about 0,5 L overfilling... and my notion is that that correspond to approximately that red-line (even a couple of mm more). So I think you should be fine 👍

Obviously different car here but the dealer overfills my GR86 by around 0.5l everytime. They must know about the starvation issues and do what most owners do.

thanks… they say they are supposed to put 4.3L… but I think there are more here… on the invoice it was 4.5L… so I don't know what to think… should I leave it or throw it away?

I usually check oil after a cold start and oil has circulated then bring it up to top mark on dipstick , thus full when running . Not had any problem over many years with this plan. Many vehicles do not like over filling but if slightly over full at rest as soon as oil circulating and pressure up no worries .
