After a couple of incidents recently I'm considering installing front and rear dashcams.

People either pull out because they don't realise what it is, or they want to get tasty because they do.

Anyway, the question is about the installation. I've seen write ups on installs and the subject of piggyback fuses and the low profile fuse box always comes up.

My question is, bearing in mind that the wiring has to run through the cabin anyway, why not connect the power directly to the battery as that's quite accessible? Is it that the power supply has to be switched rather than permanent live, or is there something else that I've missed?

Answering this one myself - yes it needs to be switched.
 
Yes switched I went with nextbase with the hardwire kit and when you get it you email them with the receipt and they send the correct low profile fuse adapter as it isn’t included as standard they do this free of charge.
 
As a slight aside to this topic I went to try and order a GR86 at my local dealer and they gave me a quote with all the usual dealer add-ons, Autoglym, alloy wheel insurance, dashcams etc. I mentioned that I would probably DIY a dashcam if I felt the need for one at which point the salesman told me that would probably invalidate any warranty. I didn't press him on this but assume it's BS of the highest order?

Yes, standard dealer BS - they would have to show that your installation was the direct cause of an issue e.g. you damaged the wiring loom and had subsequent electrical problems as a result, but they couldn't say, for example, we're not covering this gearbox failure because you installed a dashcam.

One reason why I went with the Toyota approved Nextbase. I just don't need the hassle. I ordered it about 3 months before delivery and the dealer fitted it before collection, FOC. £300 for front and rear cameras neatly installed. The box even has the wiring kit still in it, so I don't know if the cars are pre-wired?
 
I have a front camera that plugs into the 12v socket and only works when the car is running - so no power used when standing in my garage.
Does the fitted cameras from Toyota run 24/7 even when stood in my garage for a week or so without use. If so, would this run the battery down?

No, it's switched with the ignition.
 
Be mindful, I’ve been using dashcams in my work van for the last ten years or so.
I’ve had six incidents in that time and all bar one have been when the vehicle has been parked and unattended.
Claims for damage when parked must be well over £5k in that period and every time the driver drove away thinking they’d got away with it.
I’d say recording is as important when unattended as it is when being driven.
 
The install video on YouTube shows a VCC and ign install using the piggy back fuses.

I did the Mrs A3 and my Leaf (daily) with this method. It was easy.
 
I had a BlackVue dash cam, in another car, which had an optional power lead that plugged in to the OBD2 port.
