This is something I use to do in another lifetime, or it feels that way.
Some lube services it was a requirement to cut open and inspect the filter medium for foreign material. Generally I was looking for metal which usually indicates a premature failure is occurring.
It was not just engine, transmission and hydraulic filters as well.
This filter is out of a Mazda at 35,000kms, it's spotless.
I always squeeze the filter medium in a vice. You need to crush the filter medium hard otherwise it's nearly a waste of time especially with a diesel engine oil filter/black oil.
If I had a knock in my G16E-GTS engine, this is one of the things I would do.
