Now I have no idea why they bother me but any pictures I see of the 86 with the stock callipers screams at me for some reason! The car looks awesome imo but the plain pot metal looks so naff behind those big sexy shiny rims!

Does anyone have any plans for theirs? Replacing? Up-rating? Painting/coating?

I waiting for my Essex AP sprint kit to arrive. AP CP8350 4 pot calipers with the 299mm rotors. Very well regarded/reviewed in the community. One of the lightest set up you can get. In fact:

Before
Stock 18" Wheels + Tyres: 43.1lb (Stock 18" wheel + tyre)
Stock Calipers: 7.8lb
Stock Rotors: 17lb
Steel knuckles: 12.4lbs
Total: 80.3lb

After
RPF1 17x7: 15lb
215/45R17 tyres: 22lb
AP Sprint calipers (CP8350): 5.4lb
AP Sprint rotor (CP3862 ie 299mm): 12.2lb
Aluminum Knuckles: 9lbs
Total: 63.6lb

63.6/80.3 = 80%. ie 20% reduction in unsprung mass.

Weight figures from around the internet (Thats why they are in lb not my native kg hahaha).

@Jianlun , do the AP calipers have rubber dust covers for road use?

They scream at you because they look like every caliper Toyota makes and fits to a Yaris, Corolla, C-HR , RAV4 etc , they do the job but look downright “functional“ ( which they are) 😵‍💫 They are a bit like the 🐘 in the room , let’s fixate over number plate holes, but please don’t mention how the calipers look 💩 because they work ✅ and cost a lot to Not Look 💩 ✅ and won’t work any better when they look 😍😍😍.

There’s an adapter kit being sold that allows use of Clio 197 4 pot Brembos on stock disks which might be a decent option if looks are the primary concern. No idea if they fit behind stock wheels though. The kit is listed on eBay for £599 sans pads.

Having searched a bit it looks like the same calipers used in the Godspeed kit discussed here: https://www.gt86.org.uk/forums/forums/topic/7121-bbk-options/

I want to get the callipers painted, however, I’m weary of giving Toyota any reason to get out of a warranty repair.

Ebay has got you covered (pun intended):

for the love of all things JDM don't buy those.

The cast steel standard calipers will be a lot heavier than some aluminium aftermarket offerings.

My daily driver had those horrible single piston floating calipers, but came with 4-piston Brembos as an optional extra. The standard calipers are a lot smaller, but still weighed more. Forgive the bathroom scales.

I remember my GT86 calipers started to look rusty after a few months (I know they're aluminum). The very early ones didn't have an protection on them, later they had a clear laquer of some sort to offer some protection. I ended up painting mine with silver engine block paint. they looked Ok and I'll probably do the same with these.

I mean it is tempting…

People can’t seriously buy those right?

Didn’t the GR Yaris come with decent callipers? And the Supra? So only the 86 missed out :(
I get they tried to reduce cost but there are things I would happily throw money at them to have done differently! This being one!

But yes they do the job and I’m sure my 5 year old just take his crayolas and sort them out 🤣
