Unfortunately I was rear-ended whilst stationary last week, looks to be cosmetic only, new bumper and tailgate required. However, looking at the back ends of the rear arches they both have a very slight bulge outwards about 3-4 cm forward of the joint with the bumper. I honestly can’t remember if this is how it should be or if it’s further damage. Please see pics. I’d be really grateful if anyone could check theirs and see if it’s as God intended or not.

Cheers all.

I think you are ok ! Mine looks like it also has an imperceivable curve there too, hardly noticeable at some angles, then from another angle there appears to be a slight flare tapering down to the rear bumper. What a chore, was the driver not paying attention? on the phone? or pulled away thinking you had gone while he was looking to the right? total sacrilege.

Thanks for that Old Boy. Good to hear that it might be normal. I’d still be grateful to hear from others as well.

It was coming up to a roundabout at the end of a dual carriageway, I’d just stopped and for whatever reason he didn’t see me until too late. He did brake but prob hit me at about 20mph I’d guess.

They are all like that, once noted it can’t be unseen so I don’t usually mention it. Visually when I’ve looked one side seems more flared than the other so don’t let that fool you. My vote is that your bowed arch was created in Japan !

Exactly the same as mine, I did wonder why they weren’t identical…. # Bespoke build 🤷🏼👍🏻

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply guys. That’s really helpful and as you say, not quite identical.

Further update on this, the body shop has been authorised to ‘repair’ the arch bulges so they’re going to end up straight! I had a chat with the engineer who’ll be doing the work and we reckon it’s a quirk from the construction. In the last couple of cm the folded under edge of the arch is cut differently (can’t send photos as the car is not at home 🙁) and this has resulted in a slightly different bend near that point hence the bulge.

Anyway mine are going to be tapped straight. Will report back when she’s returned home.

Is that a Toyota dealership repair shop?

Mine has a bulge either side and both are ever so slightly different.
Personally I wouldn’t be comfortable with having them “tapped straight”.

But hey I’m no engineer.

No it’s a big place which does lots of insurance stuff, certainly looked very professional and sounds to do high quality repair work. I’m personally not too worried about it being straightened but might go back and review it now you’ve put a doubt in my mind!

Mine is also asymmetrical which made me think it might have been accident related.

Sorry, I only said that because it may have presented a problem with resale if someone wondered why they were not flared like all the others.
You know what buyers can be like if there is any evidence of repair.

I have questioned it myself many times but eventually convinced myself they are like that for a reason.. 🤷🏻😉

Yeah I know what you mean, I’ll keep pics of the damage for if I ever sell it (unlikely) to show it’s not structural.
I’ve seen the magic these paintless dent repair guys can do with nasty dents and creases so I think if it is straightened it should look ‘factory’. Except to those in the know of course.

Any other opinions more than welcome….should I, shouldn’t I?

I think my ocd would definitely prefer them straight.
My mojo would definitely prefer them how the factory intended.

😂😂

Hopefully someone else will chime in and shed some light on our little bulges 🥴😀

DON'T get them beaten flat, you could be in a world of pain if the paint cracks ! Just leave them as Toyota intended !

I’ve just taken a trip to see a used one for sale and it’s exactly the same.

They’re staying!

Don’t even go there , I did this 🤦‍♀️ this was before I realised they all had them , but I feel some are worse than others I found earlier cars didn’t seem as bad ??
