Poking along the freeway this week when my gem flashed up an error message ‘ You re now in Two wheel drive !’ Consult your dealer asap. Got home and rebooted the car/ computer and back to normal . Don’t know if I had front or rear drive but did not notice much at all. A visit to my friendly dealer and No fault registered on the OBD. No explanation !
Question has anyone had this experience ?

Yes, it is a known issue. Toyota made a software update to address it. You can try updating your software at Toyota service. Some calculations were off and ITCC disconnects RWD as it is overheating.

Does this affect all Gen 1 model years? And if we don’t have access to a Toyota dealership, is there any way to update the software ourselves?

It's only applicable to cars that have the issue. If your car is actually experiencing the issue, you could try using a VPN and buy a subscription to the United States Toyota TIS and with Toyota GTS see if the update is available. May not recognize the VIN, though. The dark side of modern cars taken outside of the sales region.

Well, my GR Yaris is a 2023 UK spec, so it’s most likely already fixed from the factory, no? According to that TSB, the fix was introduced in production as of May 17, 2021.

From the TSB:
“Production change effective VIN: GR Yaris GXPA16 – change date: 17/05/2021”

That means any GR Yaris built after that date should already have:
  • The updated traction control ECU part number: 89630-52090-B
  • The updated calibration ID: F15365203200 or later
Am I reading this correctly?

Don’t know if I had front or rear drive [...]
It'd've been front wheel drive. There's no clutch between the transmission and the front wheels, but there is the rear clutch pack between the transmission and the rear wheels.

Follow up.. There has been No service update available in Aus relating to this occurrence that has not recurred ! As with my computers and TV a reboot fixed ! Not much to tap with a hammer there !
