We've got a couple of generic frost protection covers - one big and one a bit smaller. Unfortunately the larger one isn't available any more which fits both better.

Does anyone know of a decent outdoor cover - preferably just for the front and side windows or even the whole of the top? Assume the GT86 one fits?

Personally tried ones are obviously better than "taking a punt" on one.

Allegedly this is made by Toyota, there is a part number in there if you fancy doing some digging.
 
I'm glad I found this thread as I was about to start a new one. I bought a Classic Additions 'Ultimate Outdoor Cover' for my KonaN after having it Ceramic Coated and PPFd immediately from new. Although I have a garage, it's filled with shyte, so the car spends its life sitting out in the Scottish weather. The C/A outdoor cover is made of a very soft neoprene type material, which is both breathable and super water resistant. I had the cover on the car from November to February over a very harsh and windy Scottish Winter and it perfomed admirably. I've had people say "ah but a cover does more harm than good" - well these people need to get themselves out of the 1970s and become aware of how materials have developed! If you put a £30 Oxford plastic cover on your car then you deserve all you get. These Classic Additions covers are in a league of their own. Not cheap by any means but, you get what you pay for. So impressed was I with the one I bought last year that I have already bought one for my GR86 when it arrives (hopefully) later this year. Below is a photograph of the cover on my KonaN, which was protecting it from detritus before it was due to appear at a local car show (I also have wheel covers underneath to avoid staining of the main cover after I'd applied tyre shine):

Looks good, how does it tie down, are there bungees or just hooked under the car, I'd expect the scottish weather to be as windy as the NE!?

There are clips that attach front, centre and rear; a bit like the ones that you get on rucksack chest straps. In the photo you can see where the cover tightens at the securing points. The female parts are sewn into the cover within strenghtened pockets at these positions. The male straps are about 2m in length (although I haven't measured them) for my KonaN and I just pulled them taught to keep the cover in place. Even with howling winds and the inevitable cover 'vibration' my car never suffered any adverse effects or scuffing - it should be noted that the cover was ALWAYS put in place when the car had just been properly cleaned. Putting a cover on top of dust/pollen is just asking for the paintwork to be sanded.

Apologies for this thread 'resurrection', but having just bought my third cover from 'Classic Additions' I thought it warranted an update. With my GR86 due to be dropped off tomorrow for 6 months' dehumidified storage, I bought myself one of their 'Lightweight Showerproof Outdoor Covers' as it seemed something I could use for both my winter storage as well as occasional 'pre-show' summer use. I have to admit that, if you have a Ducktail Spoiler, this cover is a bit sh*t. The spoiler sees it ride up a bit at the back so it doesn't tuck under properly like the front does. The material is also quite stiff so doesn't hug the bodywork like my 'Ultimate Outdoor Cover'. It's also an absolute tw*t to get back into its bag.
I think next year I'll invest in a proper custom made soft stretchy cover. As it stands, I can't recommend this cover if you have a spoiler.
 
I got the ultimate car cover and agree I have the spoiler and it just about fits but mines the carbon weave spoiler. Did you get the lightweight one as a alternative? I can't get the ultimate cover back in the bag either and just use the big box it came in!

I got the lightweight cover to use in the Summer for overnight 'pre-car show' protection after I've detailed the car. This week I needed to dry my 'Ultimate' cover ready for today, so thought I'd test out the lightweight one a few days ago - that was the first time it'd been out of its bag.
I've never had trouble getting the ultimate cover back in its storage bag, it just takes a bit of folding familiarity and getting the last bit of air out with a bear hug. I use the car's roof as my folding platform with the following as my method of choice. Imagine wrapping a piece of cake in a tissue ... All clips/straps off and stowed. Fold cover from the bonnet up and backwards to the middle of the roof. Fold from the rear up and forwards to the middle of the roof. Lift each side upwards so that they too meet in the middle of the roof. Now fold the remaining side material up and to the centre. By this time the cover will be the width of the car's roof and overhanging front a rear windscreens a bit. Fold entire cover in half again so that you now have a long flat sausage about as wide as the storage bag. Fold inwards from the ends, expelling air as you go by gently pressing the cover against the car's roof as you go. Remove the now rolled up cover and give it a bear-hug before squeezing into the storage bag, zipping up slowly - Bob's yer uncle! :LOL:

I've been using a classic additions indoor cover for the last 2 years when I put the car into an outdoor 'bubble' when I'm away for a couple of months. I got it because it was lightweight, breathable (don't want moisture build-up) and cheap. No ducktail on mine and fits well enough. Bag that it came with was rubbish - zipper came off straight away.

Bumping this thread as I'm losing my mind over the state that my car is getting in.

Since October my 86 is no longer a daily which means it sits on the drive unused more often than not. Unfortunately I don't have a garage to keep it in.

It's tucked to side which is now exposed to the sun for 11-13 hours a day and I live in a very leafy area. It's driving me nuts how much tree detritus it picks up from not moving, then there is the bird and insect poo, dust, pollen, sap and cobwebs. It seems worse than winter, everything gets baked onto the paint and there is little rainfall to wash it off.

Any updated recommendations as to what to get? I'm happy to spend more if I can get something genuinely good and appreciate that the car needs to be spotless before it goes on.
 
Get a ‘bubble’ - mine lives in here throughout the winter and a few weeks in summer when I’m on holibobs.

That cover is ideal for car not out in open but in an enclosed parking spot cause with wind etc it will end up marking your car as its not lined and with the GR badge might just attract unwanted attention if you don't want it

I'm still using the Classic Additions Ultimate one, not the cheapest but as my car lives outside all year it was a worthwhile investment.

It ain't gonna blow away with your car in it! But you can rope it down like a tent if you wish to steady it. You drive your car onto the base, cover it over, zip it up, and turn on the power to inflate. See pic a few posts up with blue cover over my car - it is sat on the base of the bubble before being covered over and inflated. Mine is 'in the garage' brand. It kept its shape even with the heavy snow last winter.
