GR Yaris Anyone else interested in consumer coilovers for "rally car for the road" application?

I think better to ask the mother ship KW, they you have asked both. Reiger is different money altogether?
I could settle with 2 way, high speed comp damping isn't that important if valved properly from the start? But 2 way to compensate for variations in weight, friction and wear is a must have...
 
I would like some non adjustable replacement dampers and matched springs, just like OEM but better quality. Minimum 10\15mm drop and maximum 25mm. To be suited to the worst of b roads.
I have whiteline -25mm springs and they are fine on smoother b roads but a little fidgety for normal driving. I would basically like OEM suspension with a small drop.

I would like to have an Irish Tarmac-esqe setup which is for bumpy tarmac damping with ‘gravel travel’ often it is a tarmac spring and a helper spring so you have a different rate before you bottom everything out but also having additional ride height.
Not that I’d be trying to launch it over jumps when I’m home but be able to travel the bumpy undulating back roads without the constant fear of grounding out. Larger aspect ratio tyres will help too. (Some 17” Michelin Cross Climates due to be fitted soon) but no trips home with the car planned in the immediate 😕

Are you talking about the Yaris or the 86? Given that you've got a GR86 in your pic and this being a Yaris thread! :) I can definitely imagine the 86 handling undulations worse in stock condition than fhe Yaris
 
In another thread, an unexpected option arose that is in the upper consumer price bracket but that offers real rally features, unfortunately not TüV but KW should definitely be able to do something at least in that direction...

If KW did build something like that with TÜV it would cost an absolute arm and a leg. Great stuff though!
 
I have the Litchfield Nitron set up. It can be set to the normal ride height or lowered. Mine is minus 10mm. On track it is very good, but on Irish tarmac I imagine BOS with spring rate closer to standard would be better.

They could start by just taking their clubsport v4 kit and just maximise the stroke for the stock suspension, and choosing springs that allow to slightly increase the ride height at near stock spring rates. Even without additional valving or hbs that would be a very interesting, same priced, option?!?

I almost pulled the trigger for a rear spoiler but now realized car doesn't necessarily need it in low speed and 'surprise the world' adventures.
I'd propose we would spec out a "budget" version of full monty coilover and then ask quote for it from land of rallying. Likely 2 way adjustable would be sufficient for most of us mortals.

My take would be (in almost priority order)
- height adjustability from -30mm to +30mm to stock (i.e. track and winter/gravel setup)
- 10% stiffer spring rate, or then custom as per driver request
- hydraulic bump stops (to unlock jump mode)
- corrosion protected with proper treatment (to give us peace when driving those salty roads)
- I'd prefer keeping the stock setup for rear, meaning spring would be separate item to shock. Just to avoid structural problems for coilover in rear (it can rip off upper assembly)
- robust enough suspension design so that it can take enough beating
- 2 or 3 way adjustable (well 3 ways would be nice, but maybe pearls for swine IRL)
- camber adjustability from top mount would be plus but not a deal braker as usually driving with constant camber.

On last point happy to keep somewhat stock top mounts, as typically solid top mounts make a huge impact on road noise.

I would think that those would definitely improve rigidity in the whole assembly and thus also make steering feel and reactions a bit better?
If so I'd personally be willing to put up with extra noise and vibrations.
 
If we can put together 10-20 people ( depozit ) I can try to convince Protlum to make something custom for us, but no TUV.

Great, I would love the HBS and the rebound valve, but maybe the thermal compensation, the adjustable high speed compression (can be set at a good fixed setting regardless?) and the seperate reservoirs are a bit over the top for a road kit, if that helps bring down the price considerably. That with a group buy that puts the price down again could mean I can maybe commit a set this year already...

Yes, No problem to configure your personal setup. This should be around 3k and can be made just one set for you. But if we want the stock setup for rear I thing it would be a problem - expensive for one set development. For me no need for thermal compensation but hi/lo speed is must have and seperate reservoirs are nice to have;)

Three thoughts on this point I've reasoned about to myself 😂:
- The coilover arrangement allows for more bump travel I am pretty sure, if so this reduces the loads in like for like driving situations.
- The big load on the damper top mount comes when the suspension hits its bump stop, this bump stop then essentially functions as a much higher rate 'spring' on the damper mount. Here the hydraulic bump stop should reduce this worst load a bit as it dissipates energy instead of returning it in the other direction like a spring does.
- My original doubt was thinking there are very few near stock cars out there. But Protlum has been running this for two years already on a good number of cars apparently, used in rally. So if they say it works, together with the two above technical considerations, I am not worried at all about this anymore, rather the opposite, I would want a true coilover in the rear if my first reasoning is correct.
