Will you be fitting an aftermarket alarm?

No. It’s likely a bit too invasive given the extremely limited CanBus on the GR86. I’ll stick with the OEM immobiliser, reinforced by my Ghost II, MetaTrak and a Stoplock Pro. If they still nick it after all that, well, that’s life I guess 🤷‍♂️

I’m more concerned about the affect to the warranty as fitting an alarm usually requires chopping into the looms.
I’ll be sticking with the immobiliser already fitted.
Probably not, and mainly for this reason.
Have already invested in a steering wheel lock which is probably a more effective deterrent against opportunistic attempts, even though it is more annoying to deal with.

Just to provide some extra info on this you maybe unaware of. There is currently a FB post where a buyer has successfully received £500 from Toyota due to the missing alarm (Ombudsman). Quite a few buyers have now emailed Toyota online and the new response from them is that they will review each case as it's own individual case. Basically they they are willing to credit £500 if you can provide evidence of the work i.e the invoice . However they also stated that this won't be covered under warranty if you get a 3rd party to fit it.

EDIT: Looks like there is some more info here: https://www.gr-zoo.com/threads/vehicle-security.4341/page-41

Oh no, did they say it would void the complete 10 year warranty or did they just mean only the alarm won't be covered by warranty?
If it voids the toyota warranty, it would be a definite no from me I think....

Unfortunately, we do not have a Toyota genuine accessory/alarm which can be fitted to the GR86, and our approved centres would not be able to fit a non-genuine part. We are unable to advise or recommend a third-party company which can install this item for you. Please note any third-party accessory which is fitted to the vehicle will not be covered by Toyota’s warranty.

To summarise Toyota's response:
You can try to force us to pay for an alarm by complaining to either the motoring or financial ombudsman.
If you do, we'll invalidate your warranty.

This doesn't read as the warranty is voided upon fitment, only that it [the alarm] isn't covered should you fit one. I suppose it would depend on how invasive the works are to fit the alarm, i.e. splicing looms [to any further effects].

FWIW I've no interest in fitting one.

exactly. If they have to take the car apart to fit it then although the email reads as 'the alarm' not being covered , i'm not sure i'd trust them with warranty claim if something did happen to a different part of the car.

Same as you , i'm not either .

They won't (in fact, can't) void the vehicle warranty because a 3rd party alarm has been fitted.
They're saying the alarm won't be covered by the vehicle warranty, which is pretty obvious.
The caveat is that anything deemed have been 'caused' by the alarm installation wouldn't be covered (e.g. the installer damaged the wiring loom).
They could not however say we're not covering your engine under warranty because you had an alarm fitted unless they could demonstrate it was the actual cause...

I still very occasionally get a no-start gremlin. All the dash/idiot lights are up, car won't start - so intermittent dealer isn't interested, if I fit an alarm to try and get to the spec I purchased and the no-start thing gets worse/unmanageable, who will Toyota blame?

I am unlikely to get an alarm fitted for the above - I am prepared to persue some kind of compensation for the mis-selling of a product (exacerbated by a woeful product knowledge when it's pointed out)

Was thinking of getting a Land Cruiser to replace my Mercedes - that won't be happening now. Classic failure demand.

Just for information, what's the approx cost of (1) MetaTrak and (2) professional fitting?

I paid £380 for a Meta Trak S7 ATS (Insurance Approved) to be professionally installed, which also includes the first year's subscription.

Got some quotes for an alarm and have said they need the vehicle for the full day, sounds like major work to me, even the parking sensors only took half a day if I recall.
Must be some pretty hefty wiring work, install and testing of alarm if a full day is required to complete the installation 🤔
May be easier sticking with a stop lock and leaving those alarm stickers on the windscreen......

An alarm already exists for this car in other markets. There is a solution.
Toyota either know it's a pain (costly) to retrofit (maybe loom change), or they have no idea what it would take and can't be bothered to find out.

That's great detective work, never thought about it that way. The USA specs also still state an alarm so it is physically possible - and it's within the toyota family of cars so if they can fit it to a prius why not our car.
