GR86 What's this box do in the engine bay?

Does anyone know what this box on the left circled does?

I would have thought the air comes through the front right side into the air filter and then directly into the engine?

So with a KN cone filter, the intake resonator would be deleted.
I wonder if we could just block off the resonator to make more noise and maybe even an extra BHP and keep the stock air intake??

For what it's worth I blocked off the resonator on my WRX STi and it dramatically increased the intake noise. That does have the benefit of a big old turbo though...

Being on a side branch, it shouldn't affect the level much. It's tuned to resonate and take energy at a certain frequency, to remove unwanted resonance at a given engine speed.

If the weight of adding it has been signed off, it must have an effect and smoothen the intake noise 🤔
