I went to the Toyota GR track day at Thruxton. I thought it was a nice circuit and enjoyed the day.
There was an excellent thread on Pistonheads around first time track day advice so check that out.
From my experience of Thruxton:
-learn the track, and build up through the day, don’t go out of the gates at full chat. Momentum and being smooth is key. Ideally get some tuition or at least watch some of the Lap guides on YouTube. Church is a corner that if you get it right feels great and you can fly through it, if you get it wrong you’ll be on the grass.
-take regular breaks; good for both car and driver.
-adjust your tyre pressure after the first few laps, it’ll have jumped a few PSI.
-at the end of the day, take a few minutes to relax before you get back on the road. Everything on the road will seem very slow if you’ve just been bombing it through corners at 90mph you need to recalibrate.
-FUEL! Make sure you have a full tank you’ll be amazed how much it drinks when you’re on track. If you’re after 99RON there’s a Shell 7 mins drive from the circuit (SP10 3LS)
-You aren’t racing, if somebody’s in your rear view mirror they’re faster than you. Let them pass, carry on enjoying your car. If somebody is not extending you the same curtesy go through the pits and out again. If they really piss you off go to the pits and calm down before you go back out again.
Enjoy! I loved tracking my GRY as you just can’t get close to using all the performance it has on offer on the road.
