GR86 "That's a fresh whip bruv"; or the Toyota GR86 collated feedback thread

First time at my local Starbucks drive-through in the GR86, hoping that I could reach the collection window whilst keeping the wheels clear of the kerbs. The girls were pointing at the car as soon as I broached the corner. No words were needed really; with four young ladies crammed into the window and their pretty supervisor stood there with a hand barely covering her beaming ‘OMG’ smile as the lad valiantly squeezed past them to hand me my flat white. Lovely moment for this old man 💕 👴🏻. Don’t get that response when I’m in my filthy Nissan Navara! 😆

Several Hours Later …
Doing full contact wash and a young lad pulls up at my driveway on his push-bike, “Is that a Supra?” he enquires. I didn’t have the heart to reply “F**k off!” to the Supra comment so I explained what it was. He is then joined by his 3 pals (2 girls and a boy) on their bikes and he subsequently delivers a knowledgeable brief on the car. Good lad. I tell them to be safe and off they all pop with a cheery “Thank You!”. 🚴‍♂️🚴‍♀️
What a day! 😁

We made a start at 4am, Europe here we come. An hour's delay on the old Eurotunnel means an extra coffee... I will check the ODO in three weeks or so. Clearly tired and posted in the wrong thread 😁

Been away at a motorsport event, parked outside a Coop to get some emergency Tunnocks, came out as two lads passing the car...

Lad 1: "Oooh there's a Supra"
Lad 2: "No it isn't, it's a GT86. Subaru made a version as well called the BRZ"

Foreign sounds far too much like a pejorative, I think you’ll find it’s “world foods” it’ll be next to the tablet, lorne sausage and haggis. 😅
Haha! So true; English food is a pejorative up here for anything not local - for Lorne I’ve been taught to ask for a ‘square sausage’ and egg roll. The normal ones are ‘links’ apparently 🤨.
Different in Edinburgh where it’s posher though and where the wife is fae… 😉

Some fresh feedback today, albeit not delivered to me directly.

Parked up in a large busy car park which serves a variety of leisure and hospitality facilities. For reasons that will remain private (and to be fair it's not relevant to my tale), I was parked up eating a banana* with my engine off and windows down.

Couple of young blokes walk by close to my car on the way to their own vehicles. One, gesturing in the direction of my steed, says "ooh that's nice". The second says "yeah I've been reading about them, they look alright but they're not very fast".

This second guy has a T-shirt on which says - and I know this is the kind of detail which sounds made up but I promise you it's not - "Money can't buy you happiness...BUT IT CAN BUY A SUPERCAR". There was an 'arty' drawing of some sort of low slung supercar-ish vehicle accompanying the text*(2).

My interest piqued, I was torn away from attending to my banana* to see what beast this driving god got into.

The answer? A BMW 114i*(3).

So there you are comrades - money may not buy you happiness, but it can buy you one hundred and one horsepower!

*Not a euphemism.
*(2) Yes, this apparel was as ghastly as it sounds.
*(3) I didn't even know this vehicle existed - I thought BMWs started at 116i so shows what I know.

Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you a T-shirt that tells people around you that you're not as happy as you want to be. It can also buy you the cheapest way into telling people, "I've got a Beemer."

Funny how the location wasn't relevant but the banana eating was. It sounds like you've been spending too much time on the dull mens club 😆

I’m very much a southern (insert your preferred ad hominem) Englander. I’ve definitely seen and heard both Lorne/Square used when I’ve had the fortune to spend time in Scotland. Edinburgh? I was under the impression the locals considered it England anyway 😅

Not exactly a fresh whip bruv moment today but as I parked up in my local Tesco this afternoon to purchase some essential fruit juice made from grapes in New Zealand I twigged a very nice 19 reg M2 Competition pull in and park as I was, far from any door dingers.
I went into my usual routine of picking my specs out of the passenger footwell so I could get my electronic club card up on the app to avoid any unnecessary hold up or indeed conversation at the till as I checked out with one of my 5 a day, as I was performing this ritual (no need to check the date on my phone as I wasn't purchasing grub on this occasion) I sensed the presence of someone close to Bert and myself, I turned my head to the right and a gentleman more senior than myself by a couple of decades was peering into my window mouthing what's it like mate, Ive heard a lot about them,I fumbled with the ignition and lowered the window to be greeted with I think the Gold really sits nicely on the white, what exhaust is that!!
The gent was the owner of the M2 and he was a real car guy and had had a MK1 MR2 and a Celica previously and then went the BMW route with a 140i and the M2 in his garage, a good 30 minute chat ensued with bonnets and boots opened on both cars, warm start ups and light revving on both vehicles!!
As it turned out Justin was his name and it was an absolute pleasure to have a chat with a fellow car enthusiast that doesnt give a monkeys about brands, just the joy of owning and seeing others cars.
Im mildly disappointed that the conversation and revving took as long as it did as I have just opened my fruit juice and its not as cold as I would prefer!!

It's always worth stopping for a chat with a car people. I complemented a chap down the road on his S1 elise the other day and we were talking for about half an hour. Most people don't want to talk about steering directness and (lack of) inertia so when you find someone who does, you've got to take the chance.
