On Friday I had the best main dealer experience for well over a decade, I don't say that on a whim I can reassure you.

I know I am not alone that I get apprehensive when the car has to go to the main dealers, in the past I have had dents in doors, marks in the paint from someone with a dirty sponge who washed the car even thought I said don't and had a big sign hanging from the rear view mirror 'do not wash this car', you know the experiences, mine are from dealerships around Edinburgh, Glasgow and the central belt!

I was looking at my options for a run in oil change; DIY, a trusted independent or main dealer. I phoned a couple of the main dealers, 'we only do a service', ' the computer isn't coming up with that as an option', was about to give up and thought I would try the Hamilton Toyota dealership where I spoke to a very friendly and knowledgable service lady by the name of Fiona Hattie, who took my ask and phoned me promptly back with a price I thought was fair, considering I asked for oil, filter and scope of the sump regarding the concerns over RTV sealant. I asked if they were approved to work on GR cars and she confirmed 'yes' and the car would be work on only by Ryan Hay, who is their master tech and fully trained to work on GR 's.

I arrived at the dealership at 8am and by 8:30 I was in a well appointed pod to work from, fresh coffee in hand, met Ryan who assured that my car was in good hands and would pop back once the oil was drained to look in the sump with him and scope. He explained in detail about the RTV issue without being asked or prompted. A short time later I was shown through to the workshop and we had a good look round and he confirmed all was as it should be with no signs of sealant. The oil was sieved & filtered, it was clean with no sealant! :)

Ryan is a true car enthusiast who spends him free time rebuilding his 2nd 90's 1.5l Toyota hatch that he rallys (when he finds time outside of family duties), he was really enthusiastic to talk about the GR and I couldn't have met a nicer guy who is simply into his cars and respects them.

As I was settling the bill Fiona said she would let Ryan know to bring the car round to the entrance so it is not parked up so I could simply walk out and drive away. True enough car was presented outside Ryan got out, asked if I wanted to keep the steering wheel, gear knob and seat temp covers, which I did, and he informed me it was a pleasure meeting and speaking to a GR and car enthusiast and he left me a little something in the back as a thank you for choosing them and hope to see me again for its first and future services. And guess what, the car wasn't cleaned!!!

To be totally honest I was blown away, flawless experience and it was well worth the 45 mins drive, sadly where I live all dealerships and my trusted Edinburgh located independent are all 45 mins away!

In summary, if you are looking for a main dealership that won't leave you sweating when you hand your key over, you value good customer service and happy to drive the distance, I can recommend that you phone and ask to speak to Fiona - 01698 711610.

Cheers

Used them for my car, similarly excellent experience only difference is mine is a GR Yaris. Again they followed my instruction not to wash.

I’m also 1 mile from them so was even happier it was all smooth.🤣🤣

Not too much further for me to travel than Newbridge so will remember this for next service.

Have you purchased an exhaust yet, @Gibbo78? I’m still deliberating 🧐

Said exhaust is currently sitting in the box in the garage, RTV silicon arrived today ready to be fitted. Sadly I was mid flow in the current DIY project so I needed to complete that before looking at the exhaust fitment.

Thanks for sharing @Gibbo78 I was looking to get a run in oil service completed before a European road trip next month so I’ll give them a call. The car parking situation alone at Newbridge is so dismal that I’ll drive past them and the additional 25 miles for the peace of mind that the car will be looked after and worked on by someone that can be trusted. 👍🏼

Hamilton is around 45 miles farther away than my nearest Toyota dealership (Halbeath is ~1.5 miles away) and my service time is February; so it might depend on the weather in 2026 as to which dealership I end up visiting for my third service. I had thought about Edinburgh but some comments make me uncertain. It may be a worthwhile trek across country to Hamilton though come the time 🤔??

@AWB, I am totally avoiding Newbridge, hope the euro trip is a good one, I am thinking about one for this year.

@Sonic, Hamilton Toyota is a very pleasant dealership to wait whilst the work is being performed, coffee that isn’t dishwater and good WiFi. Also you could make a day of it as there are some good roads west of the M74, plus your oil will be nicely warmed by the run over, so it will run nicely out of the sump!

Based on this recommendation, I changed my first service venue dealership from Western Toyota in Stirling to Macklin Toyota in Hamilton for late August as prep for our Sept Euro hoon. Made even better as it's much closer to home and they also do Saturday AM services whilst you wait, which Stirling does not. As it was £49 and the first service, I took the three flush deal (oil, Aircon and summin' else) they had going but I do have the 10 year plan in place. But, only as it's the first service. Coffee, discuss a 1958 first edition Landcruiser possibility, mag, feet up and then home.

How lovely, would love that too, I so much detest the general 'customer experience' where I never talk to the same person between services and the only feedback from the tech is "yeah they ticked the box for the service item". Luckily dealerships do not clean cars over here unless you ask though....

Attempted to book in for an oil change with Toyota Hamilton this afternoon. No joy unfortunately. Spent over 20 minutes on the phone either holding or being bounced back and forth between people that couldn't agree with each other. Booking wanted the service department to confirm whether they'd allow my own OEM filter and Miller's oil to be provided, servicing decided to boot me back to the switchboard. Second time round the lady in the service department condescendingly told me they'd been right to send me back to switchboard the first time round claiming it's a booking issue and transferred me back to switchboard without even giving me the chance to say anything... I hung up. The only thing they've successfully done is sign me up to their marketing emails.

Disappointed given the stellar feedback they've received on here. Tempted to try again tomorrow but might just pay a little more and use my Subaru specialist local garage instead!

I find it better to call the Hamilton garage directly on 01698 663496, as opposed to the call centre that covers the full dealerships - although you may have done that. Stirling has a good rep and Ayr seems to be gaining traction. Depends where you live I suppose.

Might give that a go then! Tempted to try Ayr too as its closer to work but was keen to see if I could get booked in with Ryan at Hamilton if he still works there.

Aye, forget the switchboard as they are all the same with these motor groups. If it ain’t on the first line script the process dissolves.
Phone direct and ask to speak to Fiona in service. Hopefully you will have more of a positive experience.

I am booked in for the 20k miles service @ Hamilton on 11th April before I heaf off to JapFest, will see how it goes. I've asked for a few things, and also have a spare Toyota (in fact two in the garage) Oil filter just in case :)

My woes with Vertu Motors continue. I decided to give their Ayr branch a try as its new and closest to me (actually Darnley is but they sold my old man a dodgy Aygo and took 7 attempts to fix a radar issue on my old car). While waiting for the service advisor a young lad asked if the Blue GR86 was mine and if I wouldn't mind pulling it to the front of the dealership so they could take some promo pictures - happy to, I said. The service advisor then told me that they'd be unable to carry out an oil change unless they ordered the filter/oil themselves as it would void my warranty otherwise. So bad news everyone, none of us have warranties anymore apparently!

I told them I actually had a quote from the Darnley branch who were willing to do it for about £84ish. The service manager then came out and said she'd spoken to the manager at Darnley who said they'd never approve something like that and they weren't interested in getting involved in such things.

The kicker is she then asked if I was still willing to bring the car round to the front for some pics...

Hamilton will be getting a call next, pray for me everyone.

I'm not surprised. So many dealers are utter manure now. I've given my dealer the exact filter and plug they'd use every time and they were happy since they always struggle to get stock. If that was voiding the warranty then they'd have said. If they went back on this now I'd buy the car outright and they'd never see me again.

Spoke to Fiona at the Hamilton dealer this afternoon and after speaking to the master technician she said that they are unable to service any car unless they source the parts themselves. Wondering how this will affect those trying to book in major/minor services and if it's just a new Vertu Motors policy or coming down from Toyota corporate. Local Subie garage it is!

Will post on the general chat for visibility and to see if other dealer networks are saying the same thing.
