I remember doing something similar when the spec came out. My table of hot hatches (below). Some models/weights may not be exactly on the money but for power to weight it's a good few hundred KG lighter than everything around it.

hm? i am a bit confused. doesn't the current one with 200 PS/197 HP weight more? I've seen numbers the same as the GRY, 1230 - 1280 kg.

1088 kg looks way to light, isn't it?

Also the GRY is ratet 257 HP (or 261 PS in germania) just because you normally using Watt's metric horsepower.

just thinking loud in letters. :)

For me personally there is definitely such a thing as to much power.
A colleague had an Ultima with a supercharged 7 litre V8.

He built it with the intention of exceeding 200mph, which he did, but an issue with it was that he typically had to get over 120mph for the car to generate enough downforce to get grip.

Below 120mph he had to be so gentle on the throttle so that it wouldn't just keep spinning up.

Fun in theory but a real pain in practice.

Having ridden motorcycles for years I do find these kg/hp figures quite amusing.

Numerically the best ratios I've ridden

- on track race prepared GSXR1000 - 180kg/180hp = 1kg/hp
- on road borrowed H2 - 240kg/200hp = 1.2kg/hp
- on road owned Hayabusa 240kg/173hp = 1.4kg/hp

With 1 wheel drive and no driver aids (except on the H2).

Where it all went wrong was putting my fat arse on them.

Latest Fiesta ST had its weight standards mangled up at the launch with weights all over the place. But the last I know its curb weight is declared to be 1187kg, and magazine weighed it's 1234kg at most (with options). Sport Auto says it's 1218kg. Settle for 1220kg or 60kg less then the GRY Circuit?

Can never be enough.

I used to think you can never have too many kW or Nm until I drove a mate's current 911GT2RS. He had the previous generation GT3RS and it was a lovely thing. So much I came close to buying it when it made way for the GT2. I fell in love with that 4.0 flat six. As close to perfect to me as an engine could be. The GT2? It was a handful by comparison. On back roads you could drive the GT3 with all the horses. It felt solid and secure and predictable. The GT2 was different. Clearly faster but you feathered the throttle far more often. Anyway I am not the greatest pilot so probably just me but after an hour in the car I still punched it sideways through a curve at around 100kph that my M2 would take at 130 and the GR even more. Exciting in someone else's $800,000 car. Luckily he was ok and laughing like an idiot in the passenger seat.

Makes me wonder so much about the GT4 but it is silly money here.

@Humptydumptyhadabigone I also think there is a sweet spot for bhp/nm/weight on the road. The yaris is almost spot on. Most fun i've had on a road was with my 160bhp, 740kg (full tank of fuel), S1 Elise. Later I had a Honda k20a2 converted with 220hp at almost 800kg. Faster yes, but the balance with the lighter engine and the fun factor has never been as good as before.

A couple of Lotus guys from seloc (UK Forum) have or had a GT4's. The general opinion was, that it is a very very good car, but relatively boring and geared way too long. Of course you can fix that part.

A few then bought an Exige V6 again...not faster but more fun to drive.
The only Porsche that really appeals to me is a 996 MK2 Gt3. I was allowed to drive my mate's as i would like. No electric steering, perfect seating position and the rest - clutch, gearbox was just the right weighting. That thing pushed 400bhp....just about perfect for the road.

Like I said not perfect. Trying to get like for like weight stats is a pain but yes I’d say current fiesta st is around 60-80kg lighter than the GRY. For me the interesting numbers when I did this were the comparisons to those with more power and just how much more weight they have, especially if you have AWD. It really is very light for a modern car.

with all this speed and getting older, maybe I need to add some weight in the back to give me more time in corner exits and straights, just to get more time to enjoy during rides. With GR everything happens so fast that you often think what did just happen.

used to practice at some point a lot with go carts, and when you came from there to drive a transaxle (ie. 50-50 balanced) 944 track car it felt everything (braking, turn in, etc) was happening in slow motion. Maybe need to add that go cart driving again just to get reflexes back in shape.. Then again GR is more rapid as a platform as rear end is lighter. But sorry we were talking power to weight not reflexes or vehicle inertia..
