GR86 PH Buying Guide

It's why I don't generally engage there anymore. Full of people who proport to be car enthusiasts, yet who will let their entire opinion of a car hinge on particular number or stat like a game of top trumps.

That comment in particular irked me, place is full of people pining for the days of back to basics sports cars like we used to have, then complaining it's not fast enough for <CurrentYear>.

To be fair it’s no different to owners clubs. The amount of hate for the gen2 Yaris from people who claim to be petrolheads on here or the Facebook groups. It’s just we see less of it as we’re single marque.

Sadly most forums are like the PH thread, where things have disintegrated into something more akin a pub brawl, thankfully this forum remains to be staying clear from this.
The challenge you have is what is now out there in the majority of car reviewers. For example Carwow videos were something that I would watch but now they all seem to be about the 0-60 shootouts and Matt pulling stupid faces citing he has just purchased (again) the best car in the world…. Sigh….. enough….. bored…click bait….. so little wonder why people are following this type of behaviour in the social media rated obsessed world we now find ourselves in.
The only guys I really like to spend time watching is Harry and Henry currently, as they keep to the more original format without stupid faces and screams.

In response to PH Trousersnake: Achchooly, mine's got a stage 4 tune so it's up to about 600bhp now and over 800nM of talk (sic). I've got 3 girlfriends too and one of them is a famous actress; you wouldn't know her though coz like she's super famous in Hong Kong and we have a house in Canada, with 2 polar bears as pets. Yeah and my Dad made me a rocket garage because he's friends with Jeff Bez Elon Musk, so now I just park my Ferrari in space, so you can't see it and steal it.... Oh and Get a life you f***** virgin!

That Trousersnake. I've never met someone in real life that is that much of a dick. And I'm sure he isn't. 😁

Some people's alter egos on the Internet must be so far removed from reality, it's just nuts. The typical pissed up dickhead in the pub isn't as bad as that. And if they are only half that bad, they'll likely get a good kicking ny the end of the night. 😆😆😆

Oh for sure likely a troll. But why? I just don't get it? But then I'm normal / happy / content, so wouldn't want to. 😊

"Problem is it's 2025, and nothing with sporting pretentions should have a 0-60 starting with a 6."

🤣
"This kind of painting by numbers thinking is ruining driver engagement though, why have a manual at all when having to shift is bringing down your 0-60?"

sounds like a bunch of bus wankers that whole forum

not to mention they wouldn't even know that the auto is the slower one

I've always fealt that the vocal majority on piston heads are dreamers, or people with more money and ego than taste or ability who exist to tell people about the cars they drive, rather than actually driving them properly.

We're obviously in an echo-chamber on here, and the GR86 isn't for everyone, but if someone starts comparing a turbo diesel to an 86 I switch off immediately. we're clearly not on the same wavelength.

Last week I was talking to my mate (a few beers in). He had the run out model Megane RS when I had my FK8 civic and he couldn't comprehend why I wanted to switch to the 86. He just didn't understand why I would want to drive a car that was more difficult to extract the performance from, or ultimately slower. I imagine if he was on piston heads (if he could spell or operate a computer) he would be in the "but, it's slower than a diesel Skoda" crowd.

Ah, the 'Skoda-Man'. I think this breed are becoming more dominant than the 'Audi-Man' for sheer 'bellendedness'. I find that they're usually in a Saloon or an Estate variant. My clip below shows my latest interraction with one whilst on my way to Glasgow.
Backstory:They had been tailgating me since the Kincardine Bridge and, even when I pulled in to let them pass, they didn't seem to want to overtake and was content to sit a car's length behind me (although I purposely stretched that out a bit on a long sweeping bend, thanks to the GR86's road holding). So I had a little play, nothing too dramatic, just some nice easy roll-on ... albeit to a level that they didn't feel comfortable with and slunk back into the main traffic flow as I disappeared into the distance. The video begins as Skoda-Man catches up with me after the bend and continues his 'pursuit':

I think it's more the fact that 0-60 you can do in 2nd gear (on the limiter). 0-100 (62mph) you need 3rd which is the official measurement.
Yeah we're bundled in with the 100km/h crowd.

The point about 3rd gear is a bit of a point of contention. Let's take a Cayman for example. Every single review of any manual Cayman of any generation that I've read or watched says how the gearing is too long with 2nd gear going north of 70mph. But that means It has a better 0-62 time than if 2nd topped out at 61km/h so they'll never change it. Well, that's if they ever release another one with a gearbox 🤪

I am rather pleased that for the 86 Toyota did not go after the 0-60 time and put in higher gearing to get it in second. Porsche do compensate for their gearing by having more power and torque, and you can change gears as often but not at the same revs ranges. Back from a weekend trip up to Inveraray and I definitely using the clutch more of the time compared to previous higher gearted cars, and more fun in the process. Interestingly a number of Porsche owners have said in the past their most 'fun' model was the 2.7 / 2.9 Boxster/Cayman as it made you work for it rather than simply delivering it on a plate. I always said that I preferred the Lotus with the 1.8 n/a 5 speed box than the 1.8 Supercharge with the 6 speed, and that was it put you to work more of the time.
The whole 0-60 has for non track used become simply a indicator for me, anything that has an established performance auto box will simply make that time quicker and in the majority of cases there is no manual option which rules a lot of cars out for me personally as I don't have a motorway/city commute these days to factor into the equation.
Agree with MK, anyone can get into a 3-4 sec car (and most are now auto) and press the gas pedal and do it. I have an old PH t-shirt that puts this very simply by saying "Anyone can drive a fast car, only some people can drive a car fast".
