This could be from driving, spectating or watching on the TV.

Off the top of my head a few spring to mind.
  • Chatting with Richard Burns for a good 15 mins at a corporate work event, when everyone was drawn to Colin & Carlos and had no idea who he was
  • Standing less than a metre from a gate post that Markku Alen struck at Chatsworth House in the 80's - in a Lancia I think
  • The Mansell & Piquet battle at Silverstone in '86
  • Imola F1 weekend in 1994

Just a few, without too much thought and no Googling - what are yours?

When I was 6 I got to sit in a Ferrari F1 car at Goodwood FoS, that was pretty cool

When I was younger I had a ride with Phil Price around his rally stage at his rally school in his Subaru, again I must've been like 5-8 I don't remember the year but it was awesome. I still have videos of it

lot of memories of seeing rally cars on the road between stages on the RAC and one memorable moment following a Mclaren F1 in racing livery albeit briefly out of donnington park, by the time I’d driven about half a mile to cross the M1 on the way back to kegworth it had already got down to the motorway junction and was passing under the bridge coming the other way a considerably greater distance.

Off the top of my head:
  • Aged 11, standing in the grandstand with my dad at Chester Racecourse in 1995, watching Colin McRae win the RAC and title, and after a Subaru 1-2-3, deciding Richard Burns could do the best donuts. I'd had a couple of days off school to go watching in the forests at the end of that week.
  • Watching the 1997 British Rally Championship Manx Rally decider on TV, where Alister McRae and Gwyndaf Evans both crashed out, leaving Mark Higgins to take the championship.
  • Watching my first and only F1 race in Melbourne 2003 when I was a teenager travelling up the east coast. I seem to remember it was less than £50 for access for all sessions!
  • Being starstruck watching Juha Kankkunen testing for Subaru in Wales, and being too shy to ask for an autograph :D
  • That moment in 1998 at Margam Park involving Carlos Sainz, a blown engine, and Luis Moya's helmet through the rear window. I must have watched the daily highlights of the event so many times as I'd recorded them on VCR.

Speaking to Colin Mcrae in the middle of a Perthshire forest while he was waiting to start a stage in hi Metro 6R4 absolute legend so down to earth lovely to talk to, was only me and my wife as well as we hiked miles.

Sad time but glad we went - Going to Lanark for Colins Funeral service there were 1000`s of mad rally fans, special but sad. Convoy on the way through and Police egging everyone on to go for it. (y)

Spending time with Gazoo racing in Finland at the WRC and talking to Kris Meeke who went to school with my wifes brother.

Talking to Marcus Gronholm again in Finland.

Going to Salou on holiday and my young lad saying "Dad there are rally cars everywhere" quick google and it was WRC weekend god knows how I missed it lol and then Kris winning and I got soaked in champagne.

My young lad steering and getting pushed around the paddock in Sheddens touring car he loved that.

- sharing a laugh together with my 2year old at the Porsche Ring Paddock at Pärnu when 991 GT3 Cup roars by in its full glory
- seeing the impressive km/h Motec data from Porsche GT3 Cup R at Ahvenisto track
- great battles on wet track on local race tracks

Man to machine related memories? I've met Marcus Grönholm in person couple of times, nice fellow.

I've seen lots of motorsport over the years, but some stand outs from me
  • Watching and following the great Grp. B rally cars of the 80's around the forests of Yorkshire, Cumbria and the Borders
    • (sleeping in the car in the middle of a forest, freezing cold, waiting for the noise to start)
  • Helping, with a mate, push Stirling Moss's Mille Miglia Mercedes, with the help of Stirling, into an enclosure at Goodwood FoS - no one else around, just us three!
  • Passenger lap(s) around Oulton Park in Toyota's race prepped GT86 driven by Jolyon Palmer, just before he got his F1 contract
    • during a *free* track day from Toyota

I am fortunate enough to know Nicky Grist personally. Caught up with him a couple of weeks ago and he's still the same car nut that will happily chat for ages.

I have a few but in the spirit of the GRY and to be honest probably my favourite memories are when the WRC was in Western Australia. I was there for a project but was able to wangle time off to go to the special stages in the Collie forest which were pretty local. Then on Fridays I would head up to Perth office for some meetings or other and spend the night watching the super special stage in the city.

The stages were really accessible and the service stage in the Collie main street was even more so. The drivers would be doing their duty with the media but every so often you would have someone to yourself or at least to a group of 5 or 10 others. I got to talk to Tommi, Colin, Possum to name just a couple.

Two things though really stick in my memory. The first was an accident which caused massive damage to one of the Lancers. It arrived in Collie for service with the front pretty much torn off, one wheel at a weird angle, windscreen smashed and the intercooler dragging on the ground. Yeah that is rooted, not going anywhere. The cars sat for 30 minutes or so before work was allowed to start. The service area was on the street and we were able to walk along the footpath in front of the cars and be within a couple of metres of them. Because this car had such massive damage to the body it had been agreed that the windscreen could be removed before the service started to ensure the safety of the spectators. So off to one side the old windscreen was kicked out. The car rolled up in front of me and was left there like a wounded animal dripping every colour possible. Service started and it was amazing. One crew jumped inside and using a portapower ram pushed on the roof frame around the windscreen until a template fitted. While this was going on all four corners were in the air and stripped and the front had come off. New radiator, intercooler, oil cooler you name it was bolted on and the suspension mounting points at the front jacked into relatively correct position. By the time the 30 minute service was done the car was back together, windscreen and front bumper held on with kms of tape but it was done and drove off and finished the rally. Amazing. The whole time this was going on Tommi was calmly talking to us and explaining what had happened.

The second was on a transport stage. Everyone was told no speeding etc etc and spectator cars would be on the same transport roads between stages as competitors. I happened to have a car full in a manual 4L locally made 4 door on one of these pea gravel roads. We had already passed a speed check on the way. We were happily sliding around doing the speedlimit (100) and a bit and I noticed a plume of dust catching us quite quickly. The dust passed us and went on ahead. We were peppered by a blue Subaru with the number 3. Got to the parking area at the stage and looked over the front on my car. All four headlights and the two fog lights were smashed. Mates were a bit shocked at the amount of damage but I was in awe of being passed by Colin Mcrae!

Live? Suprisingly little. Don't like big crowds, ended up in the middle of football riots when I was like 10 and have avoided any form of crowds since.

But seen a few rallies up close as a kid (too close back then), made big impression.

Once won (by steering skills merit) a F1 paddock ticket, but changed it for a driver training experience, where I had a Belgian rally champion as instructor. He challenged me he could go faster then me, lost and made me promise not to tell his boss he drove into the gravel pit. At the debriefing I got a subtle nod when they mentioned 'some here are very good drivers already'. That was great for my ego (which needed a little bump - shy boy) but didn't necessarily made me a safer driver but still crash free 25 odd years on, that can end at any time though as this car is such a tease...

I went to one of those, blagged entry because it was the week of my birthday, but I went out with the other driver not Jolyon.

Went to Monaco for the f1 in 2013, thinking ear plugs weren't needed... I was wrong 😂

"in the good old days" can remember being on a training course in the midlands when the rac rally was in the welsh forests so when the course had finished for the day, instead of going back to the digs we went cross country to the stages! it was surreal as the small welsh village was like ealry hours of the morning and all the shops were open and the place was so busy!

the cars going though the welsh forests at night just amazing!!!!

Around Collie the Forestry Dept would drop big logs across the road in a spot you could drive around. Stopped would be rally fiends emulating their heroes. Logs were moved about a month later. I obviously don't know how I know that. There was one hairpin though I couldn't drift around without leaving the field of play. Incredibly tight.

One other time was as a sponsor's representative charging between stages in my Escort Cossie to perform various tasks on behalf of Walkers Crisps on the Lombard Rally, was varying conditions and some pretty mental driving on very empty lanes.

I stopped following Rallying when they kept the Rally GB down in Wales only. Wasn't the same.
