Anyone else struggling to get momentum this weekend? I’ve been to 3 separate Tesco petrol stations and none of them have any. Asked the cashier and he mentioned a nationwide shortage.

Guess it could be the weather and everyone getting their nicer cars out.

Went to Esso instead and paid a pretty premium for their premium unleaded.

That'll be a pain, especially as the price has dropped recently.
I'll check my local when I'm out for a drive tomorrow.

Does it make a difference? I just use the standard pumps.
I’ve always used momentum but while it wasn’t available I refilled with their regular 95 for a couple of tanks. The only difference to me was that the car seemed less jerky in 1st and 2nd when cold. But I’m back on momentum now.

Same, Bedfordshire no problem. Higher octane fuel does have advantages for engines designed for it. Not sure if the GR86 is one but for the sake of a few quid a year I go for shell or momentum

I've run the 86 on Super since day one. A bit like the range anxiety EV drivers, I have to plan ahead where the stations are for Super. Going to Anglesey next weekend and I know it's 190 miles one way, there's none on the island so will have to fill up in Bangor. Then off to C-TEC but coming back I'll need to find somewhere. Satnav say go back around Birmingham but I can't be arsed for that. I'll go back via Wrexham. Adds an hour but means no motorways.

There's a tesco with momentum at Holyhead. Except rural Scotland I've never had an issue finding fuel before

Octane Booster are always handy in such a case. Small 250ml cans are good for a full tank (50Ltr.) and will raise the quality.

Interested in this, only been using shell so far, but could I use some supermarket fuel instead and add a can of this with the same effect?

Short answer: Yes. :D The additive is a synthetic mix to raise the quality. You might consider its not that cheap in small quantities. Bulk is around 16EUR / 14GBP for 1 Liter here in Germany.

The owners manual does warn off using additional fuel additivies and cleaning additives, for the cost of the Redex at 9 quid a tank I just can't see a cost benefit there, given the cost differential between a tank of Tesco E10 and Shell vPower E5 across a 40L fill is about 6 quid. Just stick with the good stuff IMO, or if caught empty where only E10 is available just run that until you reach the E5 havens, the car is rated for it.

Not in the 86 but past cars that has to run on super where I've run short is to top up well before you think you need it so it won't drop the octane that much if you can. Then drive sensibly, no WOT and hammering it until it's got super flowing through again. My bike says it will run on 95, almost always do 98/99 and the rare times I do use 95 it's because I'm in the middle of Wales somewhere and it's to get home. It's noticeably flatter to ride and I lose almost 20 miles to a tank and when it's only a 17l tank it's a lot.

This is something I've briefly looked into. Shell and Esso are now royally taking the piss when it comes to their premium fuel, it's 15-17p per litre more than their regular fuel. Perhaps a combination of corporate greed and sticking to an E5 formula the gap won't get smaller. That's approaching £7 more per fill up, getting octane boosters in bulk may be better value.

Shell and Esso aren’t worth the extra IMO. Momentum does the job and is often 10+p cheaper. Just depends if you have it local or not I suppose.
This. It's annoying because all the stations conveniently close to my house are Esso or Shell, while the two nearest big Tesco supermarkets doing M99 are at least 15 minutes away.

Double annoying that the two nearest stations to me are Esso....with Tesco mini markets attached.
