He was doing his warm up laps from what I've read.

This isn't the first time this has happened, the last time it caused a bit of a storm online and Toyota changed their decision.

He was driving pretty gently there. Interested to find out what the root cause was.

Not warrantying for "racing" seems absurb though, the give you a free HPDE when you buy one in the states!
yep, not part of a official race or race practice (for people with racing license) I say that argument is quite shallow.

The point that issue happened on closed road is not valid either, as car should be work even if you drive it full WOT, othervise there should be a sign in manual or on dash that "please drive gently and use only 75% of throttle for max 30s, othervise you might harm the car" or smth.

I understand that if car is used for actual racing it can void the warranty but this was not the case here (which it seldom is)

The Toyota's approach was not much according their GR slogan "pushing limits for the better" - I'd say its a mismatch of sales/service reps vs. GR strategy that we maybe see here.
They could have it as a option to make strong customer relationships by managing this kind of issues without hassle, and actually learning from the issues, instead of saying "you drive it wrongly, you pay all the issues your car might have". Maybe some room to improve customer service.

I saw this on a Reddit post. Will keep an eye on it. But I did notice that someone found some older posts from the owner which suggested he wasn't exactly a sympathetic driver in general. Not saying that it failing on a track under gentle driving isn't concerning, just putting it out there.

It's also a shame that he seemed to just keep driving even after the engine was audibly knocking - perhaps couldn't hear it under his helmet? Stopping quicker might have meant less catastrophic consequences.

I was surprised by this too, as it sounded absolutely horrendous, but you can't underestimated how much a helmet dampens sound.

The cause and effect are clear (oil starvation, spun rod bearing, knock knock hello conrod welcome to the world) but we all want to know the root cause of oil starvation, owner abuse or RTV?

If this was a trackday or at the Nurburgring on a tourist day, nobody would expect Toyota to honour the engine warranty, so what’s the difference? The warranty specifically excludes any form of closed road competitive event.

I’m not saying the engine isn’t a block of cheese that’s not fit for purpose, I just don’t get the issue with the warranty being void.

This is a one way biased observation, I am not defending Toyota US but with a short clip like this, everything is missing from the whole picture.

I am not saying he did, but one could have massively miss shifted and overreved the engine right before the clip starts, just as an example.

I am still going to drive my GR86 as I wanted, not going granny it when 1 more engine out of thousands exploded.

That’s the thing with the internet, takes a few minutes to get your posting history and meant in jest or not could be used against you.

So why is he timing himself then? 🙄
He was driving so slowly it was almost comical that he happened to have a timer on his phone running. The GR86 has a built in lap timer by the way. It’s available in track mode. Hmm…

In the US you get a free NASA track day with your purchase. For the sake of the GR brand Toyota need to get their act together and stand by their product.

Also, the Nurburgring Nordschleife is a public road and your warranty is absolutely valid in that context just like it would be at 140mph on the autobahn. Insurance is a different matter ofcourse but that's a totally different topic.

All that said, the oil change the day before could have been done incorrectly. Too little oil, incorrectly fitted drain plug or filter. I really hope we do find out some context because nothing he did in that video should/would have caused that directly.

This does happen, my mate is a pretty clever chap and he's the UK's top tech chap for Hyundai
They had an i30n with the same problem, when he downloaded the data the rpm had peaked around 14000 and it turned out the driver had selected second at quite a pace instead of the intended fourth....claim was inevitably refused.
