After seeing @yuri1312 's great thread on retrofitting a Yaris Cross Headunit in his GRY, I started wondering if it is possible to retrofit the headunit from the facelifted regular Yaris (not the facelift GR Yaris. As you may know the dash layout remained very similar between prefacelift and facelift Yaris so I think this could make a very interesting project.

Main positives would be:
  • Wireless Carplay
  • Higher resolution screen
  • Retaining the volume dial (instead of the buttons found on the Yaris Cross Headunit)
  • Cleaner look without the useless buttons left and right of the screen
I am a complete noob when it comes to these things so I would love to hear your opinions if this would be possible, what would be the downsides and where to start the research?

Thank you!

It could probably but done but I imagine the cost for an OEM head unit like that would be insane.

You might be better off with a Kenwood DMX9720XDS with a custom bezel/fascia.

Or I just need to wait for some really unlucky driver to crash their brand new Yaris/Yaris Cross :D

I am trying to find the part number first, after that I can look up some documentation to find out if its compatible. I can then put search alarms to hopefully find one at an acceptable price.

I wonder if that's a straight slot in and connect with a Toyota wiring harness or whether any cut/shut would be required. Looks a decent upgrade unit.

Harness won't be problem it will be all plug and play it's making it look good without a fascia around the back of it.

my 2 cents on that.

the main issues I see with that would be:
1) wiring compatibility - if you have some patience to look through, you can go to toyota-tech.eu, pay for like 1 hour of access and download the connector schematics for that particular car to compare with the GR Yaris ones. if the physical connectors are the same and each pin has the same function (or at least, for the basic features you'll need - power, speakers, microphone, CANbus, steering buttons, usb, rear camera signal, antennas, reverse signal, etc etc) , you should be golden (I would expect some minor changes, but that's the primary concern I would have looking into that solution)
2) as mentioned before, fitment of it (without the lower trim piece you have in the GR, I would believe this headunit will look like shit when installed on the GR
3) pricing as mentioned - when you start getting more of these facelifted yaris in wreckers, you might be able to get some "bargain" prices, but otherwise, if it's anything like the yaris cross one, a new headunit of those will cost you around 2-2.5k €...

Thanks for the toyota tech tip, I will check it out.

Damn I didn’t know they costed that much brand new. I was considering a unit from a wrecked one anyway but that is really high wow.

I guess it could make more sense to buy a Yaris Cross one for now, until people wreck more of the new cars…

I have a Yaris Cross one available.

Hi GR17, did you continue your researches? Did you find something new? I recently had an experience with the cross unit and I ended up restoring the old head unit. This radio seems much better though.

I found some images of the unit on a website but the price they were asking was around 700 Euros which is a bit too high for me. I think I noticed a difference in the ports on the back but those with more experience can chime in if the ports are right for our cars or not:

Here is the link if you want to buy and give it a shot.

I found the same part and also other with even higher prices. The 12V input socket is different so I guess you would have to adapt it with an harness. Also the signal ports seem different to me so I think a swap would be a bit more complicated with respect to the YP031 unit

I hope someone brave and talented will try this before me. Only then I can convince myself to pay these amounts. If it ever drops below 400, I might try it myself.

On Aliexpress you can find much better screens made specifically for a GR Yaris, for either left and right steering wheel GRs. It comes with all the cables, outter case and fits the car perfectly.
Not sure if I can link, just search in Aliexpress for:

These are a decent option, just beware you will lose access to the car functions that can be changed via the standard unit, backup cam may be an issue too.
