ZN8: Based on the latest info from Japan, there is now a fix for the window clicking/clunking noise when opening and closing the door. This affects all versions of the GR86 up until the type D version (2025MY) which was not sold here in Europe.

The solution involves fitting a washer on the window regulator mechanism, accessed by removing the door card and vapour barrier, whilst this can be pushed through as warranty its also a relatively straightforward job for those willing to do it. Further details can be found on page 2 of this thread.

For those wanting to tackle this themselves, I will look to buy the washers in bulk to save the postage costs for these 2 small little washers. The price will be £6.50 including postage (UK only, x2 SU003-12334 washers, sent 2nd class letter).

Please respond to the poll at the top of the thread by 1st September as the order will be placed on this date. Expected delivery is around 4 weeks.

Thanks

Matt

Think someone said they had it before but noticed it last week that when it's coming down, or even when the door opens and it drops that fraction, the drivers window clicks in the door as if it's tight. Passenger is OK for now. Was there a dealer fix for it?

No fix for this unfortunately. Has been pushed by owners in the states, some had regulators replaced but made no difference.

I was probably the one as I had the regulator replacer by the dealer and commented on the forum. I think the problem is still there though not as much as before but I can foresee getting worse.

Was thinking about this yesterday funnily enough. When I wind the window all the way down it also makes a bit of a thunk, as well as clicking at the top. Does sound like there's something a bit loose.

My thread from 2 years ago is linked below.

I still get the noise. Pretty sure it's caused by the glass sticking against the rubber seal at the top of the door.

Had this for several months too - thought it might have been due to the cold weather but it’s still there now we’re back above zero C. Happens if getting in or getting out. Also thought it could be the glass sticking to the rubber and causing some tension which then ‘clicks’ out, but why doesn’t it happen on the passenger side? I’ve gummi-pfleged the rubbers too, and it still happens…

I had this window clicking nonsense develop on the driver's side a couple of weeks ago. Thought I may need to "look at it" all properly, like.

However, I shouted "SHUT THE F**K UP" at it a couple of days ago and the problem has disappeared! 🤷‍♂️

Note: This is not a scientifically-proven method, and your results may vary.

As the weather's warmed up today, I had the window wound down while driving, and noticed that I could hear a bit of a rattle from the drivers window over bumps. I've also noticed that this seems to happen on the way up sometimes too, so I think it's more mechanical, rather than anything to do with the seal.

Did a bit of digging and found a thread about the same issue on the US forums (very common it seems) and a guy there discovered that there's adjuster bolts for the window regulator (which he'd in turn found from the FT86 forums for the first gen). Tightening those up seems to have resolved the issue for now: https://www.gr86.org/posts/170017/

Haven't looked into this myself, but would be nice if there's a relatively simple fix. Someone else on GR86.org also solved the issue by just running the window reset procedure (although someone else said that didn't work for them). So a couple of things for people to look into...if I have time I might whip off the door card this weekend and investigate.

Just a follow up, I was in the car today trying to sort my creaking driver's air vent, so decided to take off the door card and have a look. No dice I'm afraid - was really hoping I'd find one of those adjustment locknuts loose, but they all feel tight to me. Didn't want to touch the actual adjustment in case I screwed something up, so I chickened out and put it all back together. If someone's braver than me, perhaps they can take a closer look, but for now, I still have a clicking window.

It's annoying because I worry that if something mechanical is loose, it's eventually going to break under strain. But I have absolutely no faith in taking it to a dealer. I'm sure they'd keep the car for a day or two then just shrug and give it back to me.

Are you sure it’s the vent?

I had the same sort of creak when I first bought the car and suspected it was the vent for a long time - it turned out it was the A-pillar (the creaking stopped if I jammed a finger in there!).

I’ve got the same clicking from the driver’s window, but nothing from the other side. Industrial quantities of Gummi Pflege have had no impact…

To be honest, no I'm not, but I've already put tape between the speaker grill and the A-pillar as pressing on that seemed to help, but that didn't fix it. It only happens when its cold and goes away pretty quickly as the car warms up, but it's pretty obnoxious, like a cracking sound.

Occasionally, I have this click on the passenger side window. Mostly when it's cold outside.
Yesterday I was installing the focal speakers in the doors and I noticed a plastic "puck" and an rubber coated angle bracket. Probably an end stop for the puck, when the door is closed and the window fully closed. In case this is making the clicking sound, I tried putting a little grease on it.
Here a picture of said elements:

From what I could see, the puck is attached to the window with a screw and bolt. The black rubber does not touch the glass. Maybe it causes the wet lines indirectly 🤷‍♂️

Mine has actually scratched the glass!! A couple of cars in the USA have had window replaced, shall be seeing dealer and reporting problem 🤬

Does anyone have a VPN? Because there might be a potential solution. Someone on Reddit posted about the issue and a Japanese user responded that it's an easy fix by changing a washer for a revised version on the window regulator...

I replied and asked for more detail and he gave me a link...but when I click it it doesn't work because....

If someone has got a VPN and could access that link and perhaps translate or get the images downloaded, and we can find supplier for the part number he mentions, maybe we can try fixing it ourselves.
