Washing the car today and found the roof wrap is cracking along the lenth of the roof in 2 separate areas. Both are the inside edge of the bulge above drive and passenger heads.
Anyone else experience the roof wrap cracking. My car is an early one so 3 and 1/2+ years old now.

The wrap was never tough enough from the factory. The wrap on my roof, when new, was stained/marked on the day it arrived in the UK. Toyota did replace it at their expense & the invoice states just shy of £4000. Crazy. Why it didn’t come from the factory exposed & lacquered is beyond me.

I think if/when you do get it sorted mate, you need some uv protection on it... Like a coating.. As the wrap is total dog shit quality lets be honest!! We use igl shield which is so hydrophobic and beads like hell for years. So can sort yours when your next round after the wrap is replaced. . Fingers crossed.

And the manual I think from memory suggests it requires replacing at the 10 year point……

Didn't notice anything the last time I gave it a wash, but it lives in a garage most of the time. The weather might start to degrade the vinyl after a while. I don't use any detergent on it either - just a spray of water and a soft cloth to dry it. It should be under warranty too.

Can't find any such reference in the manual.

Please signpost if you get a chance to doublecheck.
Just checked manual and cant see it although I definitely have seen something, as it wasn’t there possibly it was a forum post around the time roof’s were getting replacement wrap for defects and a dealer said it? (Obviously aware dealers say so much crap) I started trawling the old forum but have given up, sorry.

However a quick check of 3M who I would consider a leader in the manufacture of vinyl wrap and the 2080 series wrap for cars is a life of 8 years before fading and deterioration happens (on a vertical surface) and 3 years on the horizontal. So it does sound plausible. I’m at 4 years or thereabouts since build and showing no signs of discolouration or de-lamination yet and always parked outside.

You don't happen to have a break-down of how the invoice totalled £4k do you? I'm going through the warranty process right now on my 2020 car and all that TGB will agree paying out for is the TSB related to the roof that allows 5.5hrs to carry out the entire job of stripping the roof, prepping the roof, as many coats of lacquer as needed and then applying the OE vinyl wrap over the now perfectly finished roof and covering it up again!

I’ll try dig out the paperwork tomorrow mate. From memory, there are seals & a few other parts that require replacing for a proper job.

The vinyl itself is just over £1700

Last one we replaced through an insurance claim took us 6 hours to strip the glue and prep the surface, and then about 30 minutes to fit the vinyl, so around £380 labour costs.

At £4k someone has made a bit of a profit!

If you can get a pay out rather than a warranty replacement I would go for that and either replace it with a decent alternative for a fraction of the price (3M, Avery) with the caveat that it may / will need replacing at some point in the future (Not an issue if you plan to move the car on at some point), or get the forged roof flattened and UV lacquered

Mine has been exposed now, and as Sticky mentioned, as an early car according to the detailer that stripped it, the glue was awful and the wrap apparently is poor quality chinese. Happy with this route for me.

Might those rips be bird damage, live anywhere where sea gulls frequent the neighbourhood ?

@RallyRob
I was incorrect about the previous amount I stated. Not sure where I plucked that figure from!

£2500

The Vinyl is £1,500 from Toyota UK, then the wrap company charged £500. The Toyota Dealer had to replace both side trims, the rear trim clips, the shark fin seal, remove the head lining, deliver the car to the wrap company and re collect. Re fit the head lining. So the dealer charge must be the balance £500

i'm at a really odd impasse right now as the cost for Toyota suggested body shop to prep the roof and then a detailer supply XPEL clear ppf in place of the OE vinyl, works out less that the cost of the OE vinyl itself...but TGB will not agree to pay for this. Only option is to replace the OE vinyl according to the T-SB, but it only allows for 5.5hrs of labour for the entire job including removing the original, then flatting/making good the roof, lacquering and then finally refitting. It seems crazy to go through all the prep to make a lovely finished forged carbon roof and then cover it up with the fake carbon wrap.

I don't understand why Toyota will be flatting and laquering the roof if they're replacing it like for like.

If they're honouring warranty could let them do it, and if good prep is done just to peel off and ppf afterwards would likely be less than £400 for the lovely exposed
