I can't believe I am actually thinking this tbh.

After our Euro tour, we have discussed a larger, more powerful GT style touring car.

Only one car comes to mind (as I have Porsche'd myself enough) and it's a 'keep the GR86 or change situation', and the F-type has always been on our 'want' list.

Do I really want a 2018 (ish) Jaguar F-type Coupe R-Dynamic 380ps 3.0 V6 RWD as an alternative toy? Kind of like the below example.

I think I might need to whittle some birch and go stand in the woods for some self flagellation if this keeps up...

I sold an F-Type R in 2020 and used the proceeds (eventually) to pay for my 86.

The R, with a 550bhp V8 is of course ridiculously fast and sounds like thunder however I much prefer driving the 86. On a twisty b-road, the 86 is leagues ahead for handling fun. 400kg weight saving will do that.

The F-Type might be a bigger car but it has less legroom and luggage space than an 86 thanks to the stupid bulkhead behind the rear seats.

I considered a similar move back in the summer when I ended up doing quite a few long trips. The GR86 just wasn't right for it. A comfortable fast GT would have been a better choice than a true Sports Car. It didn't go any further when I ended up doing shorter trips and more driving just for fun.

I'd let some time pass from your euro tour and revisit it.

That's what the winter is for, and good all season tyres 😁

The F-Type is a lovely looking car, one of the nicest out there. I scratched the F-Type itch and got a convertible as I got a great deal that was too good to miss when lock downs were still a thing. For me it was just too wide a car for the roads I love to drive on, and only lasted for a year before I replaced it with a GR Supra, which I enjoyed driving much more. I guess it was designed for American roads (and customers). I wouldn’t dismiss it, but get a good test drive to see if it’s for you.

You do hear some horror stories about JLR reliability and waiting for parts also.
Could a Z4 or a Supra be an alternative.
I do like both those cars but aesthetically neither make the heart race. A 3.0 manual supra may be a nice thing, but £40k nice, would just keep the GR86.

I have had 5 JLR cars over the years and won’t be buying another for that reason. I always hoped they would get better but never did.
LR I understand, but the J? We have a 12 year old Range Rover Sport in the family, hardly missed a beat in 110,000 miles. The two year old Defender 90 commercial, the same.

I have been reading a few F-type Facebook pages, a few common items on the V6 for sure.

My brother has the R (v8 550ish hp), and the owners club rave about the reliability of the supercharged v8. Not sure about the'lesser' engines, that's maybe where the tales of reliability issues stem from

I think the V8 and the older engines are largely proven tech if serviced.
It's the newer Ingenium petrol and diesels you hear the horror stories about, turbos failing sending metal into the engine and timing chain failures. Seems to be linked to the 2 year service interval, oil quality drops and causes the issues.

I'd keep the defender in warranty, that's an Ingenium engine and do annual oil changes.

I changed my GR86 for an Octavia VRS, a strange swap maybe but I wanted to drop down to one car & needed something that was more of an allrounder.

Wow what a swap. Considered one of these as a second car, just querying if we need the space of an estate or if a 5 door hatchback will suffice for now (may go down the eco route too). Love the appearance of them, really nice things to look at especially the side profile with the right wheels.
