At my local dealer today looking at the gr86 demos and the 3 brand new on the forecourt.
I was also offered to also order a new car for April 2024 delivery which will be the next batch.. anyone else been offered this? I thought the gr86 sales ended in 2023…

In the latest twist by Toyota it seems they are going to push up to the July 2024 deadline afterall. Double page ad as soon as you turn cover in this months EVO magazine out today……

I think I won’t be alone in uttering “w⚓️s” in response to this latest revelation. Or… they’re having their hand forced being able to get the remainder of the second batch sold before the end of 2023 as intended. Who knows.

No-one knows what goes through the minds of Toyota PR dept!
They are leaving it a bit late putting out a big 2 page ad if they want to sell and register the remaining cars before dec 31.
It’s not like the thing on most peoples minds on dec 6 is ‘I know what I need to do in the next 3 weeks, buy a 30k car quickly and get it on my drive before new year!’

Just a few thoughts from someone who put an initial deposit down on a GR86 before the first online-only orders went live:
  • I never bought the car to flip, so a capped resale value was never an issue for me.
  • This is an enthusiast car with limited market appeal:
    • most ordinary people buy (or lease) a car that meets their practical needs or has a status symbol - the GR86 will not satisfy either
    • interest rates are currently high and the economy has stagnated in the last few years, so most people don't have the disposable income to spend on a car
    • majority of people who have £30k to dump on a sports car would choose something like a used Cayman or an M2/3/4
    • wealthy individuals who can afford a new supercar, a 911, or even an A110 would probably not be cross-shopping a GR86
  • Regardless of the current availability, the car is only going to be available to buy brand new for the next few months, as all GR86s will need to be registered in the UK/EU before July 2024.
  • After that, your only option would be to buy a pre-registered or a used example. The latter likely having been treated with more care and attention.
  • High resale values can be an issue too:
    • insurers are less likely to want to insure you (or will charge an extortionate amount to do so)
    • owners will worry about the car being stolen and not getting their full value back
    • owners are less likely to drive the car, as it becomes more of a precious asset and less of an R&R toy
  • The resale value only really matters at the point of sale, so current values are not a great indicator of a future resale value (unless you want to sell it imminently).
  • More GR86s on the road means more aftermarket parts available, cheaper servicing, more events.
  • This will keep the community alive and growing in the future.

If you bought the car to flip, I have no real sympathy for you.

If you're an enthusiast who's intending on keeping it long-term, none of this should really affect you negatively.

I appreciate that there will be other concerned individuals who may fall outside of these two groups, but I'm generalising here.

Toyota U.K. involvement I’d think more in the lines of one of these…
Loving how it's the Neptune/Electric Blue chap giving a tickle to the bawz of another car representative...

  • most ordinary people buy (or lease) a car ... as a status symbol - the GR86 will not satisfy...
Exactly, and such a mistake! I bought the GR86 because I find it quite pretty and can happily spend my time fettling its cleanliness. 💋
  • most people don't have the disposable income to spend on a car
Certainly not in these times fer sure!
  • majority of people who have £30k to dump on a sports car would choose something like a used Cayman or an M2/3/4
Nah, I just don't see the attraction in Porsche and I detest BMWs. In the end I allowed myself a £55k spending pot (to accommodate for a 2024 Mustang) but, found the GR86 ticked my urges and gave me enough change to spend elsewhere (at my local wristwatch AD for example).
  • I'm generalising here.
There are exeptions of course but, a valid collection of observations sir! ;)

Apparently.

Given how this rollercoaster has been over the past 2 years, I wouldn't be surprised if at the 11th hour, miraculously the car is able to comply with GSR2 and this will no longer be true.

This smoke and mirrors is not just centred around the GR86, the future of GR Yaris seems to be in limbo, will there be any more? Will it get an update? They are developing an 8 speed auto version apparently. The 5th gen Prius was not intended to be sold in the UK but now Toyota have done a U turn and have changed their minds. The Supra, big song and dance over the effort to design and sell a manual, which you can't seem to buy anywhere.

Modular rally roof scoop hiding the camera for the lane keeping/collision avoidance camera gear 🤣

Joking aside I’m definitely of the opinion that any press release or information coming from Toyota UK can be dismissed out of had at this point. l’ll wait for a more reliable source of information to confirm the state of play.

I didn’t know that about the latest Prius… I have vowed to never ever give Toyota another penny because of the GR debacle but I do like the Prius.. Looks awesome

I’ve received the stock TOL reply to my request for a retrospective discount on the GR after weeks of radio silence .. Jack at TOL apologised as he “hadn’t seen my last four emails”… BS.. he was waiting to be handed the legal department approved reply for disgruntled customers…

So no Prius for me and no more Toyotas in my lifetime.

I love the GR which is the only positive but I guess it’s the most important one.. It’s a brilliant car , sadly let down by Toyota’s piss poor attitude

interesting... The thing is the MY24 is entering production very soon and the MY24 has the Eyesight for all variants which complies with the GSR2.

My bet is that the GR86 will continue on sale even after 2024. There is no real argument to not continue the import to the European market. The GR86 cost twice as much here as it does in the domestic JP market. Toyota would be crazy not to continue to sell it.
